Ladies Wimbledon 2011: Sabine Lisicki Upsets Li Na in Second Round

Lauren LynchJun 24, 2011

She almost upset the world No. 3, Vera Zvonareva, fighting through cramps in the second round of the French Open. To make it to the third round at Wimbledon, German wild card Sabine Lisicki upset French Open Champion Li Na 3-6, 6-4, 8-6 on Thursday.

Li broke Lisicki in the first break point of the match and won the set on her serve.

The second set ended with Li double faulting between the two trading service breaks. The German converted five of 11 her break-point opportunities, while Li secured four out of 11 chances.

Li actually had two match points, but Lisicki fought back at deuce for the third match point of her own, when the third-seeded Li hit the ball wide during the 54-minute third set.

The 2009 Wimbledon quarterfinalist folded to her knees with tears of happiness.

Lisicki rejoiced in her postmatch interview saying, "My emotions are over the moon!"

Prior to this match, Lisicki had a fair bit of unluckiness.

She was injured for the majority of the 2010 season and said, "I had to start over from being on crutches for seven weeks."

Now, thus far, the world No. 62 has hit the most aces at the All England Club for the ladies with 17.

She had 32 winners, 21 unforced errors, five doubles faults and won 76 percent of first serves in her second-round victory. She hit a whopping 124 mile-per-hour serve on top of her success.

She is also one of the contestants fighting for a contract with the Sony Ericsson's WTA in the Xperia Hot Shots social media contest. This may put her ahead of the her opponents. She is currently in second place after Sorana Cirstea for her followers on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
