TNA: Will Christopher Daniels Be the Fly in the Ointment of Fortune?
AJ Styles had a simple request. Well, two actually last night on TNA IMPACT. He wanted to be included in the Destination X PPV, since he was the first-ever champion when the division was established and he wanted to headline the event.
Simple enough as it would seem and when Samoa Joe came to the ring, it appeared that Styles, who has won every possible title in IMPACT, had an opponent for the pay per view.
Then it got a little uncomfortable.
As the two superstars looked to have agreed to the match that had fans screaming, Christopher Daniels marched to the ring and made his own proclamation. He challenged Styles to a match at Destination X, causing confusion on the face of his best friend and anger in Samoa Joe.
But the challenge and subsequent acceptance of two friends who are part of the group Fortune, did more than make a great match for the next big payday for TNA, it opened the door for questions about the solidity of top face factions in the promotion.
Daniels came to Fortune and re-signed with IMPACT when Styles bruised his spine in an accident involving Bully Ray and a powerbomb that went wrong.
Daniels joined the faction, making it stronger and more competitive in its battle against Immortal (which does not seem like a battle lately).
Now, as any wrestling fan and writer knows, there will probably be some sort of face change for either Styles or Daniels (I am betting on Daniels) after the pay per view and will change the course of programming, etc.
Daniels is a phenomenal athlete and very popular in TNA. He and Styles are two of the best performers in the business and locks as great X-Division performers.
But when Daniels showed he was more interested in himself and possibly earning more individual respect, it chipped at the success of Fortune.
This week Bobby Roode returned to action and for the first time, Beer Money, Daniels, Styles and Kazarian, who was confronted by Samoa Joe after Daniels' surprising request, will probably be Joe's opponent at the pay per view.
This is the same thing that happens all the time...but in reverse.
Teams break up (The Miz and John Morrison, The Corre, Evolution) and when they do, it is usually started by one domino that knocks over the rest. Right now, Fortune is involved in “Bound For Glory” series, the tag team title picture, and individual agendas.
Even Bobby Roode said he came back early without medical clearance for a shot at being a world champion someday. Bully Ray vs. Styles has not been resolved, and Kazarian still has his eyes set on X-Division gold and Abyss.
Exciting television, yes it is. Confusion, well that is nothing new. And while IMPACT is getting better at developing the right feud combinations, this one (Styles/Daniels) may be the best of the long, hot summer.
