Philadelphia Phillies: The Top 5 Phillies of All Time

Jason AmareldJun 23, 2011

In over 100 years of existence, the Philadelphia Phillies have had many great players over the years. The Phillies franchise has two World Championships and 10 Eastern Division titles.

We can thank great players for these titles, without them the city of Philadelphia would never had the chance to see the city streets packed with fans for a parade down Broad Street.

The Phillies have a great history and it is something fans can truly be proud of.

Here are the top Philadelphia Phillies off all time.

5. Harry Kalas

1 of 5

The voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, Harry Kalas, may be the greatest and most charismatic broadcaster in the history of sports.

The city misses him dearly, but we are happy that he got to call another World Series before the world lost one of its most iconic figures.

For all who knew Harry, his voice will resonate with Phillies Phans for the rest of their lives.

Kalas also did commentary for NFL Films.

4. Ryan Howard

2 of 5

More of a prediction than anything, if Ryan Howard continues at his current pace, he could go down as one of the greatest Phillies of all time, if not the best.

Howard is currently second all time in Phillies home runs with 269. He has a long way to go to reach the great Mike Schmidt, who has 548 home runs. If anyone can reach Schmidt's total it will be Howard.

Ryan is the all-time Phillies leader in slugging percentage at .567.

Ryan is also 10th all time in RBI with 809, he will pass Greg Luzinski, Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrel's career RBI totals this season which will rank 7th all time.

If Ryan can continue to stay consistent with his production, he will find himself in the top 10 in almost every single offensive category in the next three to four years.

3. Robin Roberts

3 of 5

Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts is one of the Philadelphia Phillies most dominating starting pitchers.

During his career he pitched  3739.1 innings which is the most all time for the Philadelphia Phillies. He also has the most complete games in Phillies history with 272, a record that will never be broken.

Roberts is second all-time in games started with 472, second in wins with 234 and also second in strike outs with 1871.

Between 1950 and 1955 Roberts won 20 games each season, leading the NL in victories from 1952 to 1955.

In 1999, he ranked No. 74 in The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players of all time.

2. Steve Carlton

4 of 5

Steven "Lefty" Carlton may be the greatest left-handed pitcher in the history of the game of baseball.

His fastball was great and his slider was almost un-hittable. He was a true strikeout pitcher, over his career his had 3071 K's, which is good for most all time by a Phillies pitcher.

Carlton also leads the Phillies with 241 career wins and games started—499.

He is third all time in complete games, 185, second in shut outs with 39 and second in innings pitched with 3697.1

Lefty was selected to 10 All-Star games, a four time NL Cy Young Award Winner, and won two World Series titles.

1. Mike Schmidt

5 of 5

Mike Schmidt is without a doubt the best player to ever put on a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.

The Hall of Fame third baseman is a true treasure to the city of brotherly love and is still affiliated with the organization today.

Mike is the all-time Phillies leader with 8352 at bats, 1506 runs, 2234 hits, 548 home runs, 1595 RBI, 4404 total bases and 1507 walks.

These numbers are simply remarkable.

Mike is a 12-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove Award Winner, six-time Silver Slugger Award Winner and three-time NL MVP.

Schmidt was also the 1980 World Series MVP.

Mike Schmidt is the best Phillie of all time and will most likely be the best player for a long, long time.
