Luka Modric to Get a Bumper Deal from Tottenham Hotspur

Ishan ChowdhuryJun 21, 2011

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been in touch with Luka Modric's agent, Mario Mamic, who has indicated that the 25-year-old is ready to accept the club's decision not to sell him following Levy's strongly-worded statement on Saturday.

Modric has said he will not hand in an official transfer request, and Spurs officials believe Chelsea "got to him" prior to giving the ill-advised interviews.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has suggested that the Stamford Bridge club had been in contact with Modric for a number of weeks.

There is suspicion regarding the role of super-agent Kia Joorabchian—who is not a representative of Modric—in the supposed talks.

While Levy and Redknapp are understood to have been hurt by Modric's declaration of his desire to leave, they understand that his £45,000-a-week salary—agreed upon when he signed a six-year contract last summer—undervalues him in the current market.

Redknapp rates Modric as the best player in his squad and believes an improved salary will settle the tension down, with club sources insisting they have no concerns about any negative influence in the dressing room.

Tottenham gave a clear indication that they expect Modric to stay as he featured heavily in the club's publicity to launch next season's strips. Club sources are adamant his situation will not mirror the saga that eventually saw Dimitar Berbatov join Manchester United for £30.75m on the last day of the 2008 summer transfer window.

Spurs expect Modric to remain in north London for at least one more season, but he will be told that he can leave next summer—with the club's blessing—should Redknapp's side miss out on the Champions League places.
