NFL Free Agency: Plaxico Burress Isn't a Good Fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers

Carlos SandovalJun 20, 2011

Recently, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweeted that the Pittsburgh Steelers had interest in bringing back wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

That tweet also stated the team would consider getting rid of current receiver Antwaan Randle El.

In my opinion, that would be a huge mistake for the Steelers to make.

The Steelers already have a lot of depth at the wideout position. Not only do they currently line up Hines Ward and explosive 20-yards-per-catch receiver Mike Wallace alongside one another, but they also had Antwaan Randle El last season while lining up Heath Miller at the tight end position.

Furthermore, the Steelers ranked 12th in the league in yards through the air, averaging just over 210 passing yards per game.

Oh, and let's not forget that Plaxico Burress hasn't played football since 2008.

What the Steelers don't know is what the rest of the league—and the plethora of NFL analysts out there on the web—don't know. That, dear reader, is the likelihood that Plax will be in good football conditioning or if he'll have lost his game while in prison the past 18 months.

This move won't push the Steelers any closer to the Super Bowl trophy that they were just points away from last season. They threw for two touchdown passes in that game against one of the best pass defenses in the league, and that's an indicator of how plausible their receiving corps is.

If the Steelers wanted another receiver, Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes (another former Steeler) would be on the market. But to go after someone who has been out of the game for nearly three years?

Pointless.
