Fantasy Baseball: What to Expect from Eric Hosmer Going Forward

Alex HallJun 20, 2011

It's been almost two months since the highly anticipated call-up of Kansas City Royals' first baseman Eric Hosmer and any of the fantasy managers who were lucky enough to pick up the rookie enjoyed a considerable amount of production upon his arrival in the big leagues.

However, June has not been as kind to Hosmer owners as May turned out to be. The Florida born Royal recorded five home runs and 22 RBI in just 23 games during his first month in the MLB, but has cooled off considerably since the calendar has turned to June.

Unless he knocks one out of the park in the next two weeks, Hosmer will finish June with no homers, and has only recorded five RBI in 18 games this month.

It's certainly been a tale of two months for the first baseman. Despite his June struggles however, there's no reason to jump ship on the Hosmer bandwagon. For one thing, the Royals aren't putting up big numbers in the runs category and with his team struggling to drive home more than two runs a game, there leaves little room for Hosmer to drive one in.

Even without the RBI and home runs to his name this month, Hosmer has posted only five games without a hit so far this June, while posting seven two-hit performances.

Unlike other big-name rookies like Anthony Rizzo and teammate Mike Moustakas, Hosmer has shown no signs of difficulty hitting off major league pitchers.

His June stats may be hollow, but at the very least he's been helping his owners' batting average stats. His current .283 average is identical to his average at the end of May.

Hosmer is in a home run drought and that's not something you like to see from power hitters, but there's no reason to be down on someone who's contributing a nice average and will no doubt get back to his old ways soon enough.

Despite the drop in some aspects of his game, Hosmer has shown that he is still seeing the ball well and getting himself on base at least once a game.

June wasn't the sexier of the two months for the former top rated first base prospect, but it wasn't horribly ugly either. Hosmer will come back around to numbers similar to his May output soon— possibly sooner if Moustakas and Alex Gordon can heat up. Expect this production drought to end come sometime early in July and for the Royals' first basemen to put up at least 5 homers come next month.

Once this happens, Hosmer owners will again be blowing up their leagues' message boards to brag about how they beat out the rest of the league for rookie standout.
