WWE Capitol Punishment Results: What's Next for Mysterio After Loss to CM Punk?

Graham GSM MatthewsJun 20, 2011

Last night WWE presented it's inaugural Capitol Punishment pay-per-view, filled with controversial endings all night. Each match was either mediocre or had a questionable finish, but it was the bout between long-time rivals CM Punk and Rey Mysterio that stole the show.

Sure, we've seen them battle no less than a dozen times, but it's their natural chemistry that always allows them to put on spectacular matches. For a filler feud only used to get both wrestlers on the show, it sure was one hell of a way to do it.

With that said, I do not see the rivalry between these two continuing beyond Capitol Punishment, as they've literally beaten this feud to death. Punk won the contest clean last night, so I see no reason to resume it.

Anyways, CM Punk looks to move into the WWE Championship picture with this huge win, as this is the first time he's looked strong in months. With his days numbered, it's logical to keep the straight-edge superstar looking credible if his departure is going to mean anything.

However, where does this leave Rey Mysterio?

This marks the second straight pay—per—view that the Ultimate Underdog has lost, which is shocking seeing how popular he is with the fans as a babyface. He was the star of the show on SmackDown, but since moving to Monday nights, he has taken his rightful place as a veteran who helps others get over who need the heat, with R-Truth being a prime example.

The RAW roster is very repetitive, as almost every feud available is something we've previously seen done on Friday nights. Being in the company for so long has finally caught up to him, having to re-visit rivalries some fans want to see just lay to rest.

With the excess of heels on the flagship show, you would think that there would be multiple opportunities for Rey Mysterio to find something exciting to do. That isn't the case here, and most of the fresh feuds are with lower-class superstars such as Drew McIntyre and Zack Ryder.

As of last night, Dolph Ziggler is the new United States champion after defeating Kofi Kingston to win the prestigious belt. Again, a feud with Ziggler has already been done with Mysterio, but it would mean so much more seeing how much the bleached-blonde superstar has improved over the past two years.

Much like CM Punk, they both contain a grand amount of chemistry that could provide us with intense and exciting action. This could also help Ziggler build credibility to once again become a top heel in the company.

In closure, keep an out for the Master of the 619 in coming weeks, especially as we progress towards Money in the Bank next month. As his anticipated, rumored bout with Sin Cara nears, what would you like to see Rey Mysterio accomplish until then? GSM out.
