NHL Free Agency: Brad Richards, Zach Parise and the Top 50 Free Agents
Following the Stanley Cup playoffs, it's time to look toward free agency and the draft.
Listed in this slideshow are the top 50 free agents.
There is more of a focus on unrestricted free agents (UFAs) or older restricted free agents (RFAs) who are more likely to leave their team or demand big-time salaries.
Salaries courtesy of CapGeek.com.
50. Ladislav Smid
1 of 50
Stats: 78 games played, zero goals, 10 points, minus-10, 85 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.3 mil
Age/Status: 25/RFA
Ladislav Smid's minus-10 plus/minus looks ugly, but he was also playing on a poor team the whole season.
Anyone looking for a young, affordable defensive-defensemen with extensive NHL experience (331 games played) will take a long look at this guy.
49. Rob Niedermayer
2 of 50
Stats: 71 games played, five goals, 19 points, minus-eight, 22 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.25 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
Rob Niedermayer's time in the NHL is coming to a close, but some teams in need of veteran leadership will look at him.
48. Mike Grier
3 of 50
Stats: 73 games played, five goals, 16 points, even, 12 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.5 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
Mike Grier is aging and unproductive, but he's responsible in his own end and has solid leadership intangibles.
47. Jamie Langenbrunner
4 of 50
Stats: 70 games played, nine goals, 32 points, minus-18, 45 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.8 mil
Age/Status: 35/UFA
Jamie Langenbrunner was brought into Dallas for his second stint in order to provide leadership and direction in a young locker room.
The team did not make the playoffs, but to lay that all on Langenbrunner's shoulders is pretty harsh.
He's still a veteran with strong leadership abilities.
46. Marty Reasoner
5 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 14 goals, 32 points, plus-two, 22 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.15
Age/Status: 34/UFA
Marty Reasoner is aged and far from flashy, but he's productive and comes with a small price tag.
45. Alexander Frolov
6 of 50
Stats: 43 games played, seven goals, 16 points, plus-four, eight penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.0 mil
Age/Status: 28/UFA
He's a great talent capable of scoring 30 goals a season, but Alexander Frolov also comes with baggage.
He was in Tort's doghouse most of the season and probably will looking for employment elsewhere.
44. Raffi Torres
7 of 50
Stats: 80 games played, 14 goals, 29 points, plus-four, 78 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.0 mil
Age/Status: 29/UFA
One of two NHLers from a Spanish-speaking household (Scott Gomez is the other), Raffi Torres will probably re-sign with the 'Nucks.
However, if he hits the open market, he'd be a fit for anyone who needs an agitator.
43. Scottie Upshall
8 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 22 goals, 34 points, minus-seven, 52 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.25 mil
Age/Status: 27/UFA
An inexpensive option for a 20-goal scorer, Scottie Upshall should get a few short contract offers from teams around the league.
42. Alex Tanguay
9 of 50
Stats: 79 games played, 22 goals, 69 points, even, 24 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.7 mil
Age/Status: 31/UFA
He's older, but also cheaper than Upshall.
Odds are, however, Alex Tanguay will remain in Calgary next season.
41. Ed Jovanovski
10 of 50
Stats: 50 games played, five goals, 14 points, plus-four, 39 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $6.5
Age/Status: 34/UFA
An expensive veteran, but Ed Jovanovski played well when healthy and is a strong leader in the locker room.
40. Sami Salo
11 of 50
Stats: 27 games played, three goals, seven points, minus-three, 14 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.5 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
His efforts in the Stanley Cup playoffs have boosted his status as a free agent, but Sami Salo is bound to take a pay cut to stay in Vancouver.
If he stays healthy, he could be a big part of the Canucks' revenge tour next year.
39. Steve Sullivan
12 of 50
Stats: 44 games played, 10 goals, 22 points, plus-four, 28 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.75 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
Hindered by injury recently, Steve Sullivan is capable of scoring 20-30 goals if he stays healthy.
38. Dwayne Roloson
13 of 50
Stats: 54 games played, 24 wins, .914 save percentage, 2.59 GAA
Previous salary: $2.5 mil
Age/Status: 41/UFA
I see Dwayne Roloson staying in Tampa after what he's done, but the Bolts need a long-term solution.
Mike Smith is also an UFA ($2.2 mil), but I'm not sure he's the man there.
37. Ian White
14 of 50
Stats: 78 games played, four goals, 26 points, plus-three, 26pim
Previous salary: $3.0 mil (I rounded up)
Age/Status: 27/UFA
Ian White was a difference maker for the Sharks in the playoffs and well worth the $2.999995 price tag.
36. Scott Hannan
15 of 50
Stats: 78 games played, one goal, 11 points, plus-four, 34 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.5 mil
Age/Status: 32/UFA
Although he's getting older, Scott Hannan is still responsible in his own end and a strong asset to any contender.
I could see him going back to San Jose next year.
35. Nikolay Zherdev
16 of 50
Stats: 56 games played, 16 goals, 22 points, plus-five, 22 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.0 mil
Age/Status: 26/UFA
Not having a full season under his belt hurts, but Nikolay Zherdev is in the same place as he was last season: a cheap option with the potential to shine.
34. Bryan McCabe
17 of 50
Stats: 67 games played, seven goals, 28 points, plus-two, 34 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $5.75 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
An astute pickup from Florida midseason, Bryan McCabe was a difference maker for the Rangers in the playoffs.
Although he's advanced in age, McCabe should get a decent amount of attention in the offseason.
33. Simon Gagne
18 of 50
Stats: 63 games played, 17 goals, 40 points, minus-12, 20 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $5.25 mil
Age/Status: 31/UFA
A healthy Simon Gagne could have easily hit 25 goals this season.
Either way, he was solid in the postseason and will generate interest again this offseason.
32. Tim Connolly
19 of 50
Stats: 68 games played, 13 goals, 42 points, minus-10, 20 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.5 mil
Age/Status: 30/UFA
A healthy Tim Connolly is capable of scoring 20 goals, and his intangibles make him one of the most underrated players in the league.
31. Joni Pitkanen
20 of 50
Stats: 72 games played, five goals, 35 points, minus-two, 60 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.0 mil
Age/Status: 27/UFA
Joni Pitkanen has been solid for the 'Canes over the past three years.
Carolina will try to keep Pitkanen, but if he hits the open market, he'll be presented with myriad offers.
30. Jason Arnott
21 of 50
Stats: 73 games played, 17 goals, 31 points, minus-six, 40pim
Previous salary: $4.5 mil
Age/Status: 36/UFA
A leader off the ice and productive player on it, Jason Arnott will generate a lot of interest in the offseason despite his age.
29. Eric Brewer
22 of 50
Stats: 76 games played, nine goals, 16 points, plus-six, 81 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.25 mil
Age/Status: 32/UFA
Another move by Stevie Y that made the former Red Wing look like a genius in his GM role.
The Bolts will put forth an honest effort to keep Eric Brewer, who came over from St. Louis, in Central Florida next season.
28. Radim Vrbata
23 of 50
Stats: 79 games played, 19 goals, 48 points, plus-five, 20 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.0 mil
Age/Status: 30/UFA
Radim Vrbata is 30 and has been around the block, but any team who offers this guy a contract is getting a solid player at great value.
27. Jussi Jokinen
24 of 50
Stats: 70 games played, 19 goals, 52 points, plus-three, 24 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.7 mil
Age/Status: 28/UFA
He'll be looking for a raise, but Jussi Jokinen is still a cost-effective pickup for any team if he leaves Carolina.
26. Michael Ryder
25 of 50
Stats: 79 games played, 18 goals, 41 points, minus-one, 26 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.0
Age/Status: 31/UFA
Michael Ryder is an older player, but is still productive and an attractive free agent now that he's hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head.
25. Michael Frolik
26 of 50
Stats: 80 games played, 11 goals, 38 points, plus-two, 30 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.275 mil
Age/Status: 23/RFA
Like Nathan Horton in Boston, Michael Frolik will thrive after leaving the Cats for a contender.
Another year in Chicago, and he'll easily clear the 20-goal mark.
The Hawks would be smart to lock him up.
24. Blake Wheeler
27 of 50
Stats: 81 games played, 18 goals, 44 points, plus-10, 46 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.2 mil
Age/Status: 24/RFA
Arriving in Atlanta from Boston in a midseason trade, Blake Wheeler will be a solid player to create a foundation upon in Winnipeg.
23. Devin Setoguchi
28 of 50
Stats: 72 games played, 22 goals, 41 points, minus-two, 37 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.8 mil
Age/Status: 24/RFA
A young, three-time 20-goal scorer who got off to a rough start this season, Devin Setoguchi's play may not be predicable, but he's likely to return to San Jose next season.
22. Tomas Fleischmann
29 of 50
Stats: 45 games played, 12 goals, 31 points, plus-two, 18 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.6 mil
Age/Status: 27/UFA
In the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world of sports, Tomas Fleischmann's stock has dropped, but last year, he was highly sought after and considered a missing piece for the upstart Avs.
Then all hell broke loose for Fleischmann and Colorado.
21. Sergei Kostitsyn
30 of 50
Stats: 77 games played, 23 goals, 50 points, plus-10, 20 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $.55 mil
Age/Status: 24/RFA
After wearing out his stay in Montreal, Sergei Kostitsyn played well with the Preds last season.
His performance will merit a pay raise, but nothing unreasonable for the experienced (232 games played) winger.
20. Erik Cole
31 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 26 goals, 52 points, minus-one, 49pim
Previous salary: $2.9 mil
Age/Status: 32/UFA
Although he is on the wrong side of 30, Erik Cole still put up 25-plus goals this season.
Expect Carolina to re-sign him with the expectation that he'll improve on a more mature team next year.
19. Ryan Callahan
32 of 50
Stats: 60 games played, 23 goals, 48 points, minus-seven, 46 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.3 mil
Age/Status: 26/RFA
A young player with Olympic experience who could easily have scored 30 goals if he had a complete season, Ryan Callahan may be one of the most underrated players in the league.
18. Andrew Ladd
33 of 50
Stats: 81 games played, 29 goals, 59 points, minus-10, 39 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $2.35 mil
Age/Status: 25/RFA
Andrew Ladd will demand a pay raise after an outstanding season leading the young Thrashers.
He is likely to captain Winnipeg next season.
17. Zach Bogosian
34 of 50
Stats: 71 games played, five goals, 17 points, minus-27, 29 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.375
Age/Status: 20/RFA
Zach Bogosian will probably re-sign with Winnipeg.
However, with all the change going on and the cash this man will demand, the zombie Thrashers need to tread carefully—four of their defensemen make more than three million in salary.
16. Tomas Kaberle
35 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, four goals, 47 points, plus-four, 18pim
Previous salary: $4.25
Age/Status: 33/RFA
His sometimes lethargic play can frustrate fans, but Tomas Kaberle knows how to move the puck and will be sought after in the offseason.
15. Kevin Bieksa
36 of 50
Stats: 66 games played, six goals, 22 points, plus-32, 73 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.75 mil
Age/Status: 30/UFA
Kevin Bieksa is productive offensively and physical in his own end, making him an attractive free agent.
14. Ville Leino
37 of 50
Stats: 81 games played, 19 goals, 53 points, plus-14, 22 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $.8 mil
Age/Status: 27/UFA
Definition of a bargain, Ville Leino is improving as he ages, and Philly will put forth an honest effort to keep him in the City of Brotherly Love.
13. Clarke MacArthur
38 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 21 goals, 62 points, minus-three, 37 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.1 mil
Age/Status: 26/RFA
A Buffalo castoff, Clarke MacArthur had a big season for the Leafs and will demand a raise.
12. Joel Ward
39 of 50
Stats: 80 games played, 10 goals, 29 points, minus-one, 42 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $1.5 mil
Age/Status: 30/UFA
Normally a guy of his age and his stats would not be placed this high, but Joel Ward is a young 30 (played Canadian college after juniors) and went off during the playoffs.
11. Sean Bergenheim
40 of 50
Stats: 80 games played, 14 goals, 29 points, even, 56 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $.7 mil
Age/Status: 27/UFA
A solid wavier wire pickup from the Islanders, Tampa GM Steve Yzerman will look to keep his playoff hero in Tampa.
In order to do that, he'll have to pay Sean Bergenheim more than six figures.
10. Christian Ehrhoff
41 of 50
Stats: 79 games played, 14 goals, 50 points, plus-19, 52 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.1 mil
Age/Status: 28/UFA
Vancouver will try to keep their core together, and Christian Erhoff has to be a top priority.
He's unrestricted after coming off a 10-plus goal season and is capable of commanding a large salary from any team interested in investing in firepower from the blueline.
9. Teemu Selanne
42 of 50
Stats: 73 games played, 31 goals, 80 points, plus-six, 49pim
Previous salary: $4.5 mil
Age/Status: 40/UFA
Teemu Selanne and Nick Lidstrom have found the fountain of youth. I'm certain of it.
The only reason Selanne is not higher is because he's bound to stay in Anaheim, and I've gotta believe he'll slow down eventually.
There's a distant possibility of him going to Winnipeg, but that would be admitting that he's nearing the end.
Something I don't think he'll ever do.
8. Ilya Bryzgalov
43 of 50
Stats: 68 games played, 36 wins, .921 save percentage, 2.48 GAA
Previous salary: $4.25 mil
Age/Status: 30/RFA
Philadelphia has the rights to Ilya Bryzgalov.
However, like Dan Hamhuis last season, if they cannot fit the goaltender under the cap, he'll have plenty of suitors throughout the league.
7. Tomas Vokoun
44 of 50
Stats: 57 games played, 22 wins, .922 save percentage, 2.55 GAA
Previous salary: $5.7 mil
Age/Status: 34/UFA
The Florida Panthers have ample cap space, but Vokoun is getting older and will want to join a contender.
I could see him stay in Florida and join the Bolts next season.
6. Shea Weber
45 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 16 goals, 48 points, plus-seven, 56 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $4.5 mil
Age/Status: 25/RFA
If Nashville is serious about winning, they need to lock Shea Weber down long-term.
5. Drew Doughty
46 of 50
Stats: 76 games played, 11 goals, 40 points, plus-13, 68 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.475 mil
Age/Status: 21/RFA
Like Shea Weber in Nashville, Los Angeles is a young team that needs to lock down Drew Doughty long-term.
4. Zach Parise
47 of 50
Stats: 13 games played, three goals, six points, minus-one, six penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.125 mil
Age/Status: 26/RFA
The Devils have recently entered arbitration with Zach Parise.
Of the RFAs at the top of this list, Parise is the most likely to wear a new sweater.
3. Brad Richards
48 of 50
Stats: 72 games played, 28 goals, 77 points, plus-one, 24 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $7.8 mil
Age/Status: 31/UFA
Of the players on top of this chart, Brad Richards is most likely to move.
The Rangers will make a serious play to get the Stanley Cup champion.
2. Steven Stamkos
49 of 50
Stats: 82 games played, 45 goals, 91 points, plus-three, 74 penalty minutes
Previous salary: $3.725 mil
Age/Status: 21/RFA
Steven Stamkos will remain in Tampa; it's just a matter of how much he'll earn next year.
1. Nicklas Lidstrom
50 of 50
Stats: 82gp, 16 goals, 62 points, minus-two, 20pim
Previous salary: $6.2 mil
Age/Status: 41/UFA
Yes, that's right; Nick Lidstrom is 41.
Eventually, his time will come to a close. Hard to believe he'll go out after a 16-goal season, though.
