Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum: Top 5 YouTube Videos of Alistair Overeem
With every fight Alistair Overeem has won on his current nine-fight winning streak, there has been a growing belief that he is one of the best heavyweights in the world. However, Overeem's lack of victories over other top-notch heavyweights has garnered him many critics as well.
Scheduled to fight Fabricio Werdum later this evening as part of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, Overeem will finally get a chance to prove himself as one of the best heavyweights in the sport. In addition, Overeem will have the opportunity to avenge a loss against Werdum from earlier in his career.
As we get set for one of the biggest heavyweight fights of the year, here are the top five Overeem videos on YouTube.
Vs. Igor Vovchanchyn
1 of 5Coming off of a big win over Vitor Belfort in the opening round of the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix, Alistair Overeem was matched up against a legend of the sport in the quarterfinals, Igor Vovchanchyn.
While Vovchanchyn was clearly at the tail end of his career at that point, this was still a huge chance for Overeem to make a name for himself in the sport.
Overeem did not let the opportunity pass him by, as he locked up a standing guillotine choke for the first-round submission.
As far as the tournament went, though, Overeem's run came to an end there. Overeem would lose his next fight to Mauricio Rua in the semifinals.
Vs. Mirko Filipovic
2 of 5After losing four-of-five fights prior to joining Strikeforce and Dream, Alistair Overeem was in desperate need of some wins over notable competition in order to build his name back up.
After putting together three straight victories against veterans of the sport and capturing the Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship, Overeem finally got the shot he had been waiting for against Mirko Filipovic.
At the time, Filipovic had recently left the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) to pick up some wins overseas with Dream.
Overeem manhandled the aging Filipovic, though, taking him down and opening him up with ground-and-pound. Unfortunately, the match ended in a no contest due to repeated accidental knees to Filipovic's groin.
The MMA Hour
3 of 5On his 30th birthday, Alistair Overeem sat down with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour.
Hilarity ensued.
Vs. Todd Duffee
4 of 5In his last fight, Alistair Overeem fought Todd Duffee at Dream's Dynamite 2010.
Duffee had recently been released by the UFC, but he was still considered a rising talent and one of the tougher tests on Overeem's current winning streak.
Still, Overeem ran through Duffee without any trouble, scoring a knockout victory in under 20 seconds.
Vs. Peter Aerts
5 of 5Oddly enough, Alistai Overeem's greatest accomplishment of his martial arts career has not even come in MMA competition. Instead, it came in the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix.
Overeem was victorious in three fights in one night, which was good enough to earn him the title of 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix Champion.
Since then, Overeem has become widely considered as the best striker in MMA.
