UFC 137 Fight Card: 5 Reasons Nick Diaz Is Georges St-Pierre's Biggest Threat

Jeffrey McKinneyJun 15, 2011

Love him or hate him, Nick Diaz is one of the best fighters in MMA today.

Diaz is currently on a ten fight winning streak, which includes wins over Frank Shamrock, K.J. Noons, and Paul Daley.

Diaz recently followed in the footsteps of his teammate Jake Shields, dropping his Strikeforce title to challenge UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Although many may not give the former Strikeforce welterweight champ much of a chance against St-Pierre, he may actually be his biggest threat.

Here are 5 Reasons why the former Strikeforce Welterweight champion should not be underestimated.

It is no secret the Georges St-Pierre’s training is second to none.

What people may not know is Nick Diaz also trains hard.

Besides training with some of the best fighters in the world like Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez, Diaz also participates in triathlons.

Diaz is a dangerous fighter who can end is in the first, or go all five rounds.

Diaz Can Take a Punch

Whether it’s smart for him to drop his hands and dare an opponent to hit him or not, Diaz has a great chin.

Diaz has only loss twice by TKO, and one of those was a doctor stoppage.

Diaz got tagged with some hard shots from Paul Daley in his last fight, but showed he can take em just as good as he can dish em out.

Thirteen of Diaz’ 25 wins are by (T)KO.

Diaz is willing to stand with anybody and for good reason.

Diaz has trained with former WBA and WBC champion Luisito Pio Espinosa as well as Olympic Gold medalist Andre Ward.

He also mixes his striking up with leg kicks and body shots.

When Georges St-Pierre faced Jake Shields, he decided to stand with him. The two main reasons were because Shields is not a dangerous standing up and because Shields is a world class Brazilian Jujitsu black belt.

Diaz is also a black belt who holds eight submission wins.

St-Pierre has the wrestling advantage by far, but taking the fight to the ground may be more dangerous than helpful.

Diaz Will Be Fighting for Respect

Diaz is one of the toughest fighters in MMA today.

He’s dangerous on the feet and the ground, and he can last just as long as St-Pierre.

Many people believe that Diaz has not faced top competition during his Strikeforce title run.

Diaz will have the chance to prove he belongs with the best as he takes on arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
