NASCAR: Joey Logano at Dover and the 11 Biggest Crashes of 2011

Melissa Bauer-HerzogJun 14, 2011

As we enter the midway point of the NASCAR season, it's time to look back at the biggest crashes of the season so far. From Trucks to the Sprint Cup, there have been some pretty spectacular crashes that had people wincing as they watched or scratching their heads wondering how the crash even happened.

While some wrecks have been left off due to lack of space, there have been some amazing crashes this year that show just how safe the new cars (and trucks) are while providing us with a big show.

No. 12: Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Clint Bowyer at Darlington

1 of 12

While this may not have been a huge wreck, it not only took out Bowyer, it started a battle that we are still seeing.

Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick got together once and the tempers flared. Only yards after Bowyer was taken out, Busch sent Harvick on a ride and a little extra was also seen on pit road after the race (which can be seen around the 6:05 mark).

No. 11: Danica Patrick Takes a Ride at Bristol

2 of 12

After connecting with Ryan Truex, Danica Patrick took a ride into the wall at Bristol.

While it wasn't a big wreck, it was a hard one and one that had people wondering who was at fault.

No. 10: The Big Crash at Daytona

3 of 12

It happens every year and people wait for it to come. The 2011 Daytona 500 didn't disappoint, taking out a big chunk of the field only 29 laps into the race.

No. 9: Brad Keselowski Wrecks in the Nationwide Daytona Race

4 of 12

Daytona doesn't discriminate when taking out cars.

In this case, the track affected the Nationwide race, sending Brad Keselowski into the grass and back up the track into Josh Wise. The hard hit off of Wise sent Keslowski back to the grass and Wise down the wall.

The wreck starts around the :20 mark of the video.

No. 8: The Spring Texas Race

5 of 12

This hard hit sent Martin Truex Jr and Mark Martin across the track to slam into the inside wall while Regan Smith hit the outside wall.

All three cars sustained major damage bit everyone was fine.

No. 7: The Showdown Shows How Crazy Racing into the All Star Can Get

6 of 12

Landon Cassill blew a tire and spun out like cars do every week. It looks like a textbook blow out spin until another car (Derrike Cope) wasn't lucky enough to get out of the way and hits Cassill hard, wrecking both cars and ruining their All Star race hopes.

The wreck starts at around the :14 mark.

No. 6: The Big One at Phoenix

7 of 12

Phoenix felt like copying Daytona with a big one this year, a wreck that involved 13 cars.

The February race in the desert showed just how crazy 43 cars can get on a restart lap.

No. 5: Vicker's Car Gets the Stuffing Knocked out of It... Literally

8 of 12

This wreck was just weird.

While the wreck looked like an ordinary swipe by a turned David Ragan that has happened thousands of times in racing before, somehow Brian Vicker's door panel got ripped off. It is one of those one in a million crashes that leaves everyone wondering "What just happened?" and fit in perfectly with the theme of the night at Darlington.

No. 4: The Trucks Start the Season off with a Bang

9 of 12

The trucks are always an exciting watch and their season opener at Daytona was no exception.

A race under the lights made a flashy setting for a truck pile up that seemed to never end. Most of the trucks that were unlucky enough to be in the back were involved in a wreck that involved some big names in the series.

No. 3: Ricky Decides to Make His Truck Smaller

10 of 12

Another flashy wreck happened in the truck series when Ricky Carmichael overcorrected after going sideways and slammed into the wall at Dover.

Carmichael's truck left pieces up and down the track and was destroyed but the driver was okay.

No. 2: Mike Wallace Goes for a Tumble

11 of 12

Talladega got interesting at the end of the Aaron's 312 during the last lap. As the drivers were going into the final turn, Mike Wallace got spun around by his drafting partner, hit the wall, then hit another car and went airborne. He was okay and the race ended under a yellow with Kyle Busch winning.

Wreck starts around the 1:30 mark

No. 1: Racing for the Lead Turns Ugly

12 of 12

Dover loves to mess with cars and it did so coming to the final lap of the 2011 spring Nationwide race. Joey Logano got loose around the final turn racing for the lead and hit Clint Bowyer. Bowyer almost flipped over, instead going on his side.

The scary thing about this wreck isn't the wreck itself but that a crew man on pit road got hit with flying debris. It definitely showed that just because you aren't in or working on a car doesn't mean you are safe, even if you are yards away from the accident.
