It Ends at 86. Liverpool 1, Chelsea 0. At Stamford Bridge. Oh My GOD!
I write this at halftime, with Liverpool up 1-0 over Chelsea. For a diehard Liverpool fan, such as myself, that‘s always news enough. Of course, the location of these matches is always crucial in telling their tales. Today, that fact is especially paramount as it’s taking place at Chelsea home ground, the fortress that is Stamford Bridge. Chelsea has not dropped a match at home in over 86 games, a span of games that stretches 4 years.
It is here where I feel compelled to say, “Please, if there is a God, please, please if it’s somehow possible that you could make the next 45 minutes go by as if they were 45 seconds, I would be utterly thankful. If you need to take those 45 minutes from the last 45 minutes of my life or something, show me where to sign. Need that John Hancock in blood? Who needs 10 fingertips anyway?”

As a Liverpool fan, it’s in my DNA to root against…dislike…hate Chelsea. And I do. I hate them. As I’ve written before, the thought that Steven Gerrard might have considered a move the The Blues draws a visceral, physical reaction from my bodyakin to the type you might have walking into a final you didn’t study for after a weeklong alcohol fueled bender.
But, you can only hate a team that much if you respect them. And I do. They’ve bought…sorry, got so much quality all over the pitch and are so skillful that you know they’re capable of scoring at the slightest defensive slip.
That might be why I’m about as far from being thrilled by Liverpool goal advantage as a Liverpool fan might possibly be. In addition to our recent penchant for winning games we’re losing, Chelsea has looked so dangerous at times…as they always do.
But, goddamn it…we’re winning. At the moment, we’re fucking winning. And that’s all that matters. The second half is starting up, and with it so is the acceleration of my heart beat…here we go.
Oh…my…God…Oh…my…God….90 minutes and extra time are up….WE DID IT! WE WON!!! I would write more, I know I should, but it’s taken me five minutes just to write this because my hands are LITERALLY TREMBLING WITH JOY!!! I LOVE XABI ALONSO!!! He talks the talk and WALKS THE WALK!!
C’mon you Reds!!! YEEEEESSSS!!!
