Gunner Kiel, the Nation's Top High School QB, Has Bama Fans Waiting Even Longer
Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer) Boy, what could have been the biggest story of the day for fans of the Crimson Tide had a lot of build up and then nothing.
The nation's No. 1 HS quarterback, Gunner Kiel, a Columbus, Ind. native, seemed ready to make the Tide fan's day when he was set to announce his decision today. The reason many Alabama fans were so anxious was the fact that Kiel had said he was ready to make a decision after coming back from a trip to Tuscaloosa last week where he had nothing but glowing praise.
He said he was ready to make a decision after that visit while at his brother’s passing academy camp in their hometown this Sunday.
All the factors considered, the timing of the announcement, his visit to Alabama and the glowing remarks, all made Tide fans think they had Kiel all sealed up.
But Kiel made another last minute visit to Oklahoma. Apparently, that muddied the waters once again.
Then came the announcement on his Facebook page on Friday, “I’m sorry to everyone who thought I was going to commit this Sunday, I still have a lot to think about and when I am ready I will announce. Thanks.”
So there was the announcement on Sunday and the Tide fans now have reason to fear he's second-guessing that decision and perhaps leaning back toward Oklahoma.
There is no exact time frame now for an announcement, but it could come any day as Kiel wants to get this process behind him and focus on working with the HS teammates this summer.
Kiel is 6'4'', 222 pounds and has the arm every coach dreams of landing. He is the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel and his brothers Drew and Dusty are both QBs also. Drew was a quarterback for Northern Illinois last season and Dusty will be a redshirt sophomore quarterback at Indiana this fall.
