UFC 131 Results: Shane Carwin's Bloody Face Photos After Fight with Dos Santos

Nick CaronJun 11, 2011

Photos of Shane Carwin's face following a bloody war with Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 131 are beginning to flood in, and Bleacher Report is here to compile them in one easy-to-use photo slideshow!

In what was on of the most amazing displays of heart we have ever seen in the Octagon, Carwin narrowly escaped a first-round TKO when he took dozens of shots directly to the face from one of the UFC's most heavily handed punching specialists.

"The Engineer" fought back in the second round and even looked like he might take that round, but it wasn't enough as he was eventually smacked around some more by dos Santos in each of the final two rounds of this fight.

What one almost has to wonder is that, with the UFC's new initiative to include five rounds in even non-title main events in the future, would this fight have made it to five rounds?

Referee Herb Dean even stopped the bout with only a couple minutes left in the third round to make sure that Carwin could continue. Though the doctor determined that he could, it was pretty obvious that Carwin had taken a crazy amount of damage and would need some help from the medical staff after the fight.

So let's take a closer look at the brutal cuts and bruises that Shane Carwin will be dealing with tonight and for the foreseeable future.

Early in the fight, Carwin was eating quite a few jabs but had also caught dos Santos with a few punches of his own.

The heavy-handed Colorado native has the power to knock just about anyone out and was looking to do so with this right hand.

Just about everyone in the MMA world predicted that this would be a heavyweight slugfest for the ages. They were right.

Early in the contest, dos Santos and Carwin exchanged big punches from short and long distance. They both landed in this particular exchange.

After taking some big punches from dos Santos, Carwin went to the ground and covered up. If you look closely, you can see that a small cut has been opened up, but nothing major has been done yet.

It was from this position, and up against the fence, that dos Santos completely wrecked Carwin's face.

Carwin escaped dos Santos' flurry of punches in the first round and came out to fight in the second round.

Unfortunately, by that time his nose was likely broken, and he had two huge gashes under each eye.

Just when you thought the brutality was over, the new UFC heavyweight No. 1 contender continued his destruction of Shane Carwin's face in the second and third rounds.

No one has ever out-punched Shane Carwin like this, and it was a crazy sight to see.

Not to be denied, "The Engineer" fought back even after being nearly knocked out in the first round.

No one can question the determination and heart this man showed tonight. He may not have walked out with a "W" on his record, but he's a winner in the hearts of fans and certainly worthy of praise for his never-give-up attitude.

After three long, painful rounds, Shane Carwin's fight with Junior dos Santos was finally, mercifully over.

Carwin will probably tell you that he could have continued to fight, but judging from the cuts under his eyes and the broken nose he likely received, it seems doubtful that it would've lasted much longer.

This photo tells the story.

Bruises all over his face, a razor blade-like cut under his right eye, a gash over and under his left eye, a fat lip and a broken nose.

Let's just say, he's looked better.
