Mets Prospect Watch: Matt Harvey Gives Mets Fans Something to Look Forward to

Billy SmithJun 14, 2011

It looks like the New York Mets may have a glimmer of hope from their seemingly low talented minor league system.

Drafted seventh overall in the 2010 draft from The University of North Carolina, pitcher Matt Harvey has been as impressive as can be.

In single A St. Lucie this year, Harvey has been mowing hitters down ever since the beginning of the year.

So far this season, Harvey is 8-2 with a 2.44 ERA while striking out 88 batters over 70 innings. Harvey has been dominant in his time in the minors, and it gives the Mets and their fans something to look forward to in the future.

With Dillon Gee coming up and dominating in the majors, one could only hope that Harvey could bring the same with him.

Harvey didn't have great stats in college. He struggled at times and looked lost on the mound, according to some scouts. His value dropped off from a top pitching prospect to around mid ranking. Still, the Mets weren't worried about Harvey and decided to take a chance with him.

So far, it looks like a great pick.

Harvey is a great competitor. He says that he wants to be perfect all the time, which is great to hear from a young player. He has a great fastball that hits the mid 90's. One of his better pitches is his slider that has good movement. He is also developing a curve ball and cutter to add to the other pitches. They still need work, but it's a good start.

He does has some trouble locating the strike zone so he can improve there, but the talent that this kid has looks very good.

The Mets have some guys that have and can come up and make a difference in the majors. Harvey is one of these players. He is talented and could see some action in a few years. It seems like with Dillon Gee and now Harvey, the Mets are looking like a team that can draft good players.

I know we can't jump up and say that they have the best system, but it is looking like a good, solid start. So far, the Mets have two young pitchers that are looking good.

Harvey most likely wont see action this year. But it is always good to look at the future. If Harvey can play well and live up to his full potential, the Mets could have another quality arm in Queens in the next few years.

Expect to see the name Matt Harvey on the Mets in late 2012 and almost definitely, at the rate he is going, the start of 2013.
