Lindsey Hunter Still in Great Shape

Jaime IrvineOct 24, 2008

According to the Daily News, the Los Angeles Clippers brought in veteran free agent Lindsey Hunter for  a workout as a potential signing. Adding Hunter the Clippers would be a contingency plan in case Baron Davis’ injury was more significant than previously thought.

As It turns out, Davis’ injury was not severe enough for the Clippers to move forward and sign Hunter. However, Clippers management had nothing but positive things to say about Hunter.

"

“We worked him out and he looked great,” Clippers coach and general manager Mike Dunleavy said. “He’s in great shape, and a good veteran guy.”

The kind words Dunleavy praised to Hunter does not surprise me in the least. I had the fortunate opportunity to work out with Lindsey during the summer between my Freshman and Sophomore years in college.

Hunter was always the consummate professional: in early, lead by example and always kept a positive attitude when working out. I remember days when I was tired and sore and had no interest in being in the gym. Lindsey had a way of pumping you up to get you through your workout. His attitude did not just influence me, who was the lowest on the totem pole at the Pistons’ facility, but for all of the free-agents, rookies, and other veterans who were there working out in the summer. Everybody followed his lead and we all got better as a result.

One thing that Hunter constantly brought to the table was competitiveness. I have a firm belief and have stated on this blog before that competition, in life and sports, breeds greatness.

Every morning that summer, after our lifts and stretches,  we would go through shooting drills on the court. As the leader, Lindsey always made it a competition. Every single drill we were competing in some way. The competition brought game scenarios to the drill and forced each guy not to go through the motions, but do their best to win. Needless to say, professional and college basketball players will never let you hear the end of it if you lose or the team loses.  Luckily for me, I was a good shooter so the likes of Brian Cardinal was more of the butt of the jokes, but obviously, received my fair share.

I hope Lindsey the best and was unaware he was still trying to play. I read somewhere that he was looking to get into coaching and believe he would be successful at any level as a coach. However, I guess when you are still in as good as shape as him, you still want to play the game you love just one more time.
