NAIA flexes their muscles with a Champion and draft picks

Devon TeepleJun 10, 2011

Previous articles I have written have become a showcase of what the NAIA represents: a platform that allows athletes to live out a dream, get an education and represent the good that college athletics bring to the table.

Over the past couple of weeks, the sports world has been witness to the misfortunes of Ohio State University. Head football coach Jim Tressel's resignation and now star quarterback Terrelle Pryor deciding to forgo his senior season amidst additional rumours of some unfortunate decision-making.

Instead, why not shed the light on the good of the game—the good that some organizations bring to others and what sports can do to build character? Why not promote instead of shedding the light on the negatives, something the NAIA continues to do with the "Game on" campaign and PLAYNAIA blog, which entertains with real life experiences from current and former representatives?

I know, and of course, sports fans are aware that this has to be backed up with results.

The NAIA sports and media services released some very good news on June 4. Concordia University took home their first ever National Baseball Championship by defeating Lubbock Christian, 9-3. The Eagles can now lay claim as baseball's best in only their second appearance.

Championship news usually dominates the headlines, except when, after the MLB draft concluded, 45 players were selected (33 pitchers). Kudos go out to the chosen "45." You have an opportunity that many never get.

Reflecting on past experiences is something that many do. I'm no different.

My four years in Nebraska moulded me into the person I am today and my college baseball career flourished because a small NAIA school (York College) believed in my talents.

The bright lights of the NCAA are great, but there is nothing wrong with helping a young program turn the corner or continue the legacy at an established institution. Someday those drafted and the members of the Concordia squad will look back at those accomplishments in amazement.

Congratulations to the Eagles and the 45 selected to continue their baseball career professionally. You may not be aware, but former alums are taking notice and couldn't be happier.
