Bangladesh: A Football Crazy Nation With Hardly Any Football Channels

Samrin HasibOct 24, 2008

If you own a world map, take a look at South East Asia. A small microscopic country is situated there, and that is Bangladesh. A country filled with football lovers, its people are ready to die for the nation they support during the World Cup.

Club football is equally popular—ask a regular teen on the street and he will tell you about Manchester United or Arsenal. But beyond EPL and La Liga, no other leagues are shown in the country except a few Asian ones.

The Indian channel called “Neo Sports Plus”, which sponsors the Bundesliga, was a channel which received great popularity up till the month of May in 2007 when it was banned.

Serie A, Portuguese league, and Serie A (Brasilia)—these are all dreams of the future. For God’s sake, we don’t even get to watch the WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS except the Asian ones.

For Champions League, only selective games are shown.

The fact that the popularity of football might go down due to the lack of TV channels just goes to show how important TV channels are. It’s as if we are being forced to support Man Utd or Chelsea, and give up supporting Bayern or Inter. Even if we continue supporting them, the only ways we have access to their matches are through internet and news highlights.

In this country, there are people who even breathe football! This lowly ranked nation even has its own league.

The footballers of the future generation of this country will learn absolutely nothing if they continue to have access to a big-spending league such as EPL, and not to smaller-spending leagues such as the Bundesliga or Serie A. Only by watching and knowing about smaller spending leagues, can this country learn about investing in football.

All those people out there who care about football, help us! We are sick of EPL and we want to watch some real football, some international football, and some good club football like in the Bundesliga!
