The Greatest Jersey in the History of Every NFL Franchise

Brandon GalvinMay 31, 2011

There is something special about the NFL jersey, the history and respect it commands from the fans and players alike. We know how amped our favorite players get when they don their NFL jerseys. As fans, we rush to the stores to get our hands on our favorite player’s jersey to wear out in public for the rest of the world to admire.

Just about every single team has a history of different jerseys. While some are simply pathetic, others are a thing of beauty and the best in all of sports.

As our favorite franchises have gone through different eras, relocated and taken different paths creatively, each franchise has several different jerseys that we have all taken notice of.

From the black and silver of the Oakland Raiders to the burgundy of the Washington Redskins to the powder blue of the San Diego Chargers to the jersey battle between the Tennessee Titans and Houston Oilers, we’re going to determine the greatest jersey in the history of all 32 NFL franchises.

Don't forget to post your favorite!

1. Arizona Cardinals

The current Arizona Cardinals jersey is the best in franchise history. It is sleek, simple and futuristic looking. The Cardinal red stands out and they didn't try to take away from it, using the simple black and white trim to complement it.

2. Atlanta Falcons

Like the Cardinals, I prefer the current Falcons red jerseys to any other in team history. The black shadowing effect on the number is nice and goes well with the trim and black sleeve and collar. The red is a great contrast to the black helmet and fits perfectly with the logo, of course.

3. Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens' blackout alternative jersey is one of my favorite in all of sports. For some reason, it just fits this team. Whenever I think of a Raven, I don't think purple... I think of something deathlike and the black is perfect for a team led by Ray Lewis. It is a simple jersey, but the numbers stand out on the black and have the trim of purple to keep it intact.

4. Buffalo Bills

Very few jerseys beat out the Buffalo Bills' AFL throwbacks. Although the blue home jerseys also look amazing, the red-and-blue lettering and streaks stand out nicely on the white. It's a toss up really, but the white is just right.

5. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have an extremely nice home jersey. The bright blue stands out for their alternate top, but the black makes the team number, player name and blue trim stand out better than the rest.

6. Chicago Bears

6 of 32

The Bears are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. Their throwback uniforms are easily my favorite in franchise history. The numbers are nice and big for fans in the upper deck to know exactly who is holding the rock.

The dark blue is perfect for the Windy City and the orange stripes around the sleeve are nice. I like that they don't take anything away from the jersey with unnecessary designs around the shoulder pads.

7. Cincinnati Bengals

7 of 32

The current Bengals home jersey is easily tops in team history. Although a bit 'messy' as a lot is going on compared to most jerseys, you almost feel like a bengal is running down the field when they rock these jerseys. The bengal print on the sleeves is an awesome touch and the numbers have a nice, orange shadowing effect too.

8. Cleveland Browns

8 of 32

Although I've always despised the Browns' uniform and could never understand why a team would choose this color, the 1960's throwback uniform is definitely the nicest.

The brown is smooth and the letters stand out as they are easily visible and clean. I could never understand the orange helmets, but at least these offer the orange stripes around the white sleeves to spice things up from the solid brown.

9. Dallas Cowboys

9 of 32

The Cowboys do not make many changes to their jerseys and have one of the nicest in league history, but the throwback takes the cake. The star on the shoulders looks fantastic, as well as the white top. The white number looks great on the dark-blue base, completing the effect. Simply a fantastic looking jersey.

10. Denver Broncos

10 of 32

The Broncos usually have nice jerseys, though many will debate the bizarre AFL brown-and-yellow uniforms. Still, the Broncos have great color schemes, patterns and logos throughout franchise history.

These 1960 throwbacks stand out above today's more futuristic and intimidating looking jerseys. The orange stands out, but it is the sleeves that separates them. The double blue stripe surrounding the white looks nice to top off the sleeve, with each player's number residing above it.

11. Detroit Lions

The Lions might have one of my favorite jerseys in league history. I was always fond of the blue and silver. The big numbers look great across the jersey and the silver stripes are perfect on the sleeves to complement the blue and the helmet. It especially looks great when Barry Sanders is rockin' it.

12. Green Bay Packers

As much as I like the Acme Packers jerseys, I always go back to the current away jerseys. There is something about the home green that is just too much, but these stand out perfectly. The green and yellow looks amazing on the white backdrop. These are just classic and classy looking with the double green, white and yellow stripes on the sleeves and collar.

13. Houston Texans

13 of 32

The Texans have three jerseys and their alternate red takes the cake. It fits in perfectly with the state of Texas and looks the cleanest of the three. They keep the dark-blue stripe around the shoulder and number to match the helmet, but let the red take center stage.

14. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have one of the cleanest-looking jerseys in all of sports. The blue and white play amazingly off each other. While many would look at the home blue jerseys, I much prefer the white. The blue numbers stand out and the stripes over the shoulders match the horseshoe on the side of the helmet perfectly.

15. Jacksonville Jaguars

The teal is far too much for the home jerseys, but these black alternates look incredible, much like the Baltimore Ravens' alternative. The all black looks awesome with the helmet and pants. It allows the gold jaguar to truly stand out, as it gets lost in the bright teal.

16. Kansas City Chiefs

16 of 32

Kansas City's AFL throwbacks are clean and simple, but effective. They are nothing more than white numbers on the red shirt, but it looks fantastic over the white shirt and complements the helmet. The slight yellow hint gives the number a subtle pop as well.

17. Miami Dolphins

Never a fan of the home aqua or alternate orange, the away white jerseys always won by default. I enjoy the Dolphins logo, which stands out most on the white sleeve. Without overdoing it like the home jersey, the aqua teal is a nice complement on the white shirt inside the numbers and as the base trim of the sleeve.

They get the orange in there as the outline of the numbers and letters with a nice black shadow effect to finish things off.

18. Minnesota Vikings

18 of 32

Although not a fan of the purple, the 1970's throwback jerseys are the best looking, especially when compared to today's sharp and futuristic looking jerseys.

The purple looks smooth and the sleeves look solid, with the two thin stripes surrounding the large white stripe with purple in between. This jersey looks fine with the helmet, whereas the other Vikings jerseys try to do too much.

19. New England Patriots

19 of 32

Very, very few jerseys can ever beat out the New England Patriots AFL throwbacks. As a bonus, they have one of the best logos on the side of the helmet.

But back to the jersey. The red, white and blue looks amazing. The stripes on the shoulders are fantastic and the numbers are solid.

20. New Orleans Saints

20 of 32
NEW ORLEANS, LA - DECEMBER 12: Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the St. Louis Rams at the Louisiana Superdome on December 12, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints defeated the Rams 31-13. (Photo

The Saints have one of the best color schemes and uniforms in all of sports, highlighted by their sleek jersey. Everything flows perfectly and they use a nice white trim around the numbers, logo and letters. They place the Saints logo on the sleeve and the numbers on the shoulder pad to give it extra flavor.

Of course, you have to go with the black shirt over the white or gold alternative, as it makes the rest of the jersey pop out.

21. New York Giants

24 Sep 1989: Linebacker Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants holds the ball during a game against the Phoenix Cardinals at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants won the game 35-7.

The Giants' jerseys do not really stand out over time, and I despise their red alternative, but their 1980s throwbacks are nice.

For some reason, the New York Giants are one of the teams that personify America for me in all of sports. The red, white and blue color scheme of the throwback looks excellent all around.

The jerseys is clean and simple with the numbers, stripes around the sleeve and collar.

22. New York Jets

22 of 32

The New York Jets' New York Titans throwbacks easily top my list for franchise jerseys.

I've never been a fan of the Jets' current jerseys and the team should be ashamed of itself for giving up the Titans name. These jerseys look much better with the dark blue and gold filling for the numbers, in addition to the gold-and-white stripe over the shoulder.

23. Oakland Raiders

23 of 32

The best jersey in all of sports, it is tough to compete against the classic black and silver. The Raiders always have nice jerseys but nothing beats the solid black with silver filling.

Simple, clean and sharp, it's difficult to ask for anything else.

24. Philadelphia Eagles

24 of 32

Essentially, anything but these.

But as much as I like the alternate black tops, these classic 1960s throwbacks are too awesome to keep down.

They are simple, but look amazing, as they match the pants and helmet to perfection.

They use a fantastic shade of green, which is far superior to the shade they use today. Like the Raiders, sometimes all you need is a great color to highlight the print.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers

25 of 32
PITTSBURGH, PA - JANUARY 23: Ben Roethlisberger #7 of the Pittsburgh Steelers looks on against the New York Jets in the 2011 AFC Championship game at Heinz Field on January 23, 2011 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers won 24 to 19. (Photo by Grego

Pittsburgh has a couple of nice jerseys under its belt, but the current is the smoothest, cleanest, simplest and best looking.

The white-and-gold stripes on the sleeves look great, the black is solid, but the Steelers logo near the heart is what tops it off and separates it from the rest.

26. San Diego Chargers

26 of 32
OAKLAND, CA - SEPTEMBER 14: LaDainian Tomlinson #21 of the San Diego Chargers warms up before their game against the Oakland Raiders on September 14, 2009 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

As if there was a shadow of a doubt which Chargers jersey would be used.

This is easily my favorite jersey in the history of jerseys.

There is something about the powder blue that just makes me smile.

The new, alternate powder blues are nice, but nothing can top the AFL home powder-blue jerseys.

27. San Francisco 49ers

27 of 32
STANFORD, CA - JANUARY 20: Quarterback Joe Montana #16 of the San Francisco 49ers celebrates following Roger Craig second touchdown on a two yard run in Super Bowl XIX against the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium on January 20, 1985 in Stanford, Califo

The 49ers have always had great looking jerseys, but the triple white stripe on the sleeves of the red shirt always appealed to me.

It looks great coinciding with the socks and pants. Although it could have used some gold somewhere, you have to be careful not to overdo things.

28. Seattle Seahawks

28 of 32
10 Nov 1991: Quarterback Dave Krieg of the Seattle Seahawks looks to pass the ball during a game against the San Diego Chargers at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California. The Chargers won the game, 17-14.
10 Nov 1991: Quarterback Dave Krieg of the Seattle Seahawks looks to pass the ball during a game against the San Diego Chargers at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California. The Chargers won the game, 17-14.

Hands down the 1980s Seahawks uniform and jersey is the best in team history. The neon green isn't as bad as people think, especially since it looks better than the putrid, miserable shade they currently use at home.

Their 1980's jersey uses a nice shade of blue, which matched well with the pants, helmet and logo. I always liked the big logo across the sleeve meshing into the stripes.

29. St. Louis Rams

29 of 32

The bright yellow and brighter shade of blue were always too much to handle, which makes the current subdued blue and gold the winner here.

I always liked how the stripes across the shoulder coincided with the Rams horns on the side of the helmet.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

30 of 32
TAMPA, FL - DECEMBER 13: Quarterbacks Josh Freeman #5, Rudy Carpenter #12 and Josh Johnson #11 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pose for a photo just prior to the start of the game against the New York Jets at Raymond James Stadium on December 13, 2009 in Tam

Definitely not the throwback, which means the current red and pewter jerseys take a commanding lead.

These are far more intimidating than the creamsicle throwbacks. These have nice outlines surrounding the print and good-looking black trim at the bottom of the sleeves.

31. Tennessee Titans

31 of 32

The Titans' current alternative baby blue-and-white jersey is a nice throwback to the Oilers, but the current blue jerseys have too much going on with the different shades of blue. Still, nothing beats the Houston Oilers jerseys.

These are extremely clean with a great complement of colors. The baby blue looks fantastic on the white shirt, and the red trim is a nice touch as well.

32. Washington Redskins

32 of 32

The Redskins have a history of quality-looking jerseys, but their current burgundy always looks fantastic.

The yellow complements the shade perfectly and makes the burgundy stand out even more. The shade fits in nicely with the mascot of the organization.
