Tom Urtz Jr.May 31, 2011

LIVE STREAM OF PRESS CONFERENCE

There had been rumors circulating for weeks about a potential move of the Phoenix Coyotes to Canada, but that was put to rest when the NHL stepped in. The next team on the chopping block became the Atlanta Thrashers.

Now after weeks of speculation, the news is official, as reported by TSN's Bob McKenzie. Below are some of his tweets on his knowledge of the situation.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Team will play out of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference for one year before NHL realignment kicks in.

TSNBobMcKenzie: 11 am Central time announcement. Now official. Pending NHL B of G approval, Thrashers moving to Winnipeg.

TSNBobMcKenzie: True North (WPG)-Atlanta Spirit Groug (ATL) have concluded their deal. Official news advisory coming soon. News conference to follow. 11MT?

This is certainly a day for rejoicing for Canadians and Winnipeggers alike. The most interesting part of this situation is that there will be no division realignment till next season. This means that the Southwest Division will be forced to make a road trip three times this year. The rest of the Eastern Conference will make two trips each during the year.

No official moniker is set for the team, though rumors say the Manitoba Moose could be rebranded as an NHL franchise because True North has taken a lot of time to develop the brand.

It is unlikely that the Winnipeg-based team will be called the Jets because of licensing and lineage associated with the Phoenix Coyotes.

There are a lot of questions that are going to follow in the coming days, so stay tuned to Tom Urtz on Twitter for all related breaking news.
