Lee Westwood Has Never Won a Major Because...
Lee Westwood has never won a major.
He didn't win the BMW PGA at Wentworth on Sunday either.
Westwood's finish down the stretch at Wentworth gave an insight as to why he hasn't won a major. Fact is, there really shouldn't have been a playoff at Wentworth, Luke Donald shouldn't have won.
Should have, if indeed, Lee Westwood is the No. 1 player in golf.
But the facts are Westwood simply can't make big putts when he needs to. He didn't on Sunday and he hasn't in a major, which would explain why he is, majorless.
The tournament was there for Westwood to win but he had an extremely sloppy three-putt at the 16th hole then at the final hole, his wedge shot was within six feet.
Now this is very, very simple. If you are really, truly and totally the No. 1 player in the world, you don't three-putt down the stretch and you don't miss six-footers to win.
Westwood did both.
You'd figure that with back-to-back par fives as finishing holes at Wentworth, Westwood could have found a birdie.
He didn't.
Fast forward to the playoff and you basically had No. 1 vs. No. 2 for everything, it was a sand wedge duel, Donald from 97 yards, Westwood from 92.
Donald hit a gem that went past the hole and drew back to six feet. Westwood his his about a yard too far left, it also hit past the hole but spun back into the water.
End of story.
Luke Donald is your new No. 1. Lee Westwood is your new No. 2.
Neither has a major.
