WWE: Why R-Truth and an Injury Can Get John Morrison to the Main-Event

Will EMay 31, 2011

One of the biggest common wishes of the Internet Wrestling Community is that John Morrison finally gets to main-event in WWE.

It’s no secret why. Morrison is an incredible superstar who can do things in the ring that simply no one else can do.

And he’s not just a spot monkey. He’s fully capable of good in-ring storytelling and has a strong resume of fantastic matches.

And yet, even though he has been pushing on the glass ceiling for the past year or so, he just can’t quite seem to break through to the other side.

Perhaps he's taking a back seat to John Cena on Raw. Perhaps it’s because of backstage politics.

Perhaps it’s because the higher-ups in WWE don’t think he can draw, or because he doesn’t have the frame to be taken seriously.

But for whatever reason, things just haven’t clicked into place for the Shaman of Sexy.

But there may be light at the end of tunnel here. The opportunity for John Morrison to reach the top of the mountain could come in the form of a powerful new rival and a month-long injury.

One of the biggest angles in WWE recently has been R-Truth’s sudden heel turn and elevation to pseudo-main-event status. He has been drawing very positive reviews for his interesting promos and spot-on heel mannerisms.

Once written off by almost everyone, R-Truth has stormed into the main-event scene with a win over Rey Mysterio at Over the Limit and seems to be the leading candidate to challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship.

All of this began with his betrayal of partner and friend John Morrison, an angle that probably would’ve led to a match between the two at Over the Limit and possibly carrying on. We can only speculate what would’ve have happened in that match, but it seems likely an R-Truth victory would have been the result in order to keep Truth’s momentum rolling.

That didn’t happen due to an injury to Morrison, so Mysterio took the fall instead. Now Truth is in position to be the top heel on Raw, while JoMo is nowhere to be seen.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say R-Truth will challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship at Capitol Punishment.

Win or lose, Truth is probably going to have some shine coming out of that match and heading into Money in the Bank, where he could be booked as a favourite to bring home the RAW briefcase.

Who better to spoil that then the man himself, John Morrison?

This leads to a marque match-up at SummerSlam, where these two finally settle the score. If Morrison can put a stop to one of Raw’s top heels at a major PPV event, I can only see it being a matter of time before JoMo is in world title contention.

I have no idea if Cena will indeed keep the title all the way to WrestleMania 28, but if they decide not to have the title up for grabs in the Cena/Rock match, Morrison is next in line on the babyface side of things. Fresh off a big SummerSlam win—and a possible Royal Rumble victory?—JoMo would be in perfect position to finally grab that brass ring and join WWE’s elite.

Had Morrison not been injured, he may have just been a stepping stone for R-Truth. Now, he has the opportunity to be the one to finally shut him up.

It could be the beginning of John Morrison’s rise to undisputed main-event status.
