WWE: Kharma's Meltdown or Kharma's Pregnant? Which Is the Better Storyline?

Daniel MasseyMay 30, 2011

Hello Folks! As we all know, Kharma shocked the world last week, but not in the way we wanted. Instead of demolishing all eight Divas that surrounded her, she dropped to her knees and bawled like a baby.

Kharma is set to make an appearance on Raw tomorrow, presumably to clear up the confusion and outrage that arose from this situation.

In my opinion, this could go one of two ways. It will either be explained as a mental breakdown, or they could utilise the rumour that she is pregnant and twist it to their advantage.

This article will look in detail at what would be the better storyline to go ahead with out of the two.

Before I look at either storyline though, it must be considered whether it is a mistake having Kharma herself explain her actions. She has not spoken since she debuted—all we have heard from her is the maniacal laugh that sends shivers down the Divas’ spines.

Will breaking this silence make people see the character in a different light? Would writing her off without explanation have been better?

I’m of the opinion that seeing her cry in the middle of the ring is a lot worse than just having her not show up again for a year. An explanation for absence could be relayed after the debut.

However, we are not in that situation and we must play the cards we have been dealt.

First let us look at the possibility that this may be explained as a mental breakdown.

Firstly, Kharma could possibly act mentally unstable during an interview, explaining how, with so many Divas in the ring at once, she felt overwhelmed. This would make Kharma look weak however, if they are still trying to project her as a strong female.

Secondly, this breakdown could also be blamed on appearance – how she feels inadequate to the other Divas because she does not conform to the stereotypical female body projected by the WWE. This would effectively destroy any chance of her ever obliterating another Diva though I so I think we can assume that this is fairly unlikely.

Moreover, this also could be an easy way out as she could say she was leaving due to not fitting in.

The third option Kharma has, if the storyline goes down the mental breakdown route is to blame it on nervousness and being frightened.

Though this is the most unlikely explanation to be used, if it was, it would destroy the Kharma character for good and I would imagine she would have to be repackaged on her return.

After looking at three possible ways a mental breakdown can be explained, I think it’s fairly safe to say that the explanation regarding ideological female bodies is the most likely one to be used. I personally think this is the route they will take regardless, as it seems to fit the way the storyline was coming to its climax, and would also serve as an explanation as to why she decimated the other Divas.

However, WWE could do a complete U-turn with this story and, providing the rumours surrounding the pregnancy are true, incorporate it into an excellent storyline.

This would be a fantastic way to maintain Kharma’s dominance upon her return. All she needs to say is that she is pregnant and wants help—or that’s why she cried. She also could have cried because she could not fulfil her destructive needs—the mothering instinct was just too strong.

With the WWE moving further and further away from the supernatural, and focusing the product on a more contemporary, realistic style of presentation, I think it is unlikely that Kharma will give birth to something inhuman. Mae Young II is the last thing we need.

However, the father of the child could be scripted as anyone. As long as it isn’t Michael Cole I feel like this storyline could work and something could be made of ‘who is the father of Kharma’s baby?’

The likelihood of this storyline happening is low as the other option is to turn her into a caring mother who is nice to people. This, like the breakdown from nervousness idea would completely destroy the character, effectively ending her reign of terror and any hope the Divas division had of being revived.

I have covered five possible options, spanning two topics, which could be considered for the explanation of Kharma’s tears on Raw last week. Whether any of them will actually be used is anyone’s guess, but I believe one thing is for certain—we have seen the end of Kharma as we know her.

Though the mental breakdown storyline is more likely to be used, I think a storyline focusing on the pregnancy would be a lot better—not only for the fans, but also for Kharma’s character development.

I believe it is the only way she can save face, as it wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of her violent tendencies.  If they blame it on jealousy regarding the other Divas, then that will ruin any reputation she had beforehand and she will be delegitimized as the most powerful, dominant Diva in the WWE.

What do you think the WWE will choose to do with Kharma? Do you agree that Kharma being pregnant would create the best storyline?

Please leave a comment below telling me your thoughts. I always respond to all comments so please don’t hesitate to leave an opinion!
