Draft Day Miracles and Mistakes

Chris CastellanosOct 21, 2008

How did you pick your players this year? In most leagues, there is a fantasy draft almost identical to the real NFL draft. So who are this years biggest busts? Here is a list of the top performers so far this year, along with the list of the worst.

Best Picks

1. Drew Brees: Brees has thrown for over 2,000 yards and 12 TDs in only seven weeks. However, the Saints are only 3-4. In each of the wins, Brees has three TDs; in the four losses, Brees has only three TDs.

Although his TDs are not a good representation of his performance this season, Brees is averaging over 25 completions per game and over 300 yards per game. If your league counts points for these areas, Brees is a solid pick.

2. Clinton Portis: Portis leads the NFL with over 800 rushing yards and is second in TDs with seven. Portis has four games this season with over 100 yards and is averaging five yard each attempt. Portis' game average thus far is just under 120 yards per game and it doesn't look like the Redskins will be changing their gameplan any time soon. As long as they stick with him, you should too.

3. Greg Jennings: Jennings leads the NFL in receiving yard this year. Although his season hasn't been all ups, it seems the time he and Aaron Rodgers put in during the offseason is working well. Green Bay has shown, on occasion, that when Rodgers has time, he can make the Favre throws. Jennings was one of Favre's favorite targets, and it seems as if that has rolled over to Rodgers.

Worst Picks

1. Tom Brady: The QB who lead an undefeated team to another Super Bowl and shattered records along the way was injured in Week One. For most fantasy leagues, Brady was in the "Can't Cut" column, which meant he was stuck on your roster. What better way to fill a spot on your roster than with someone you can't play.

2. Randy Moss: After Brady fell, so did Randy Moss. The league leader in TDs from a year ago has only had a couple games this season at the same level as last year. Matt Cassel is starting to understand that if he gets the ball to Moss or Welker, they will make the plays happen. For most leagues, Moss has had almost no impact.

3. LaDainian Tomlinson: In Tomlinson's previous seven seasons, he has over 1,000 yards and at least 10 or more TDs. So far this season, Tomlinson only has 446 yards and four TDs. This may not be a good sign with half the season finished.

At this rate, Tomlinson is looking at not breaking the 1,000 yard mark and may not hit his career low of 10 TDs. Averaging only 3.6 yards per carry is not the type of performance fantasy coaches are looking for, so don't be surprised if he is on the bench in most leagues.
