Washington Redskins: Which Quarterback Makes the Most Sense?

Bell MalleyJun 1, 2011

This NFL offseason, one of the most followed position battles will be for starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins.

As of now, there are four potential options: John Beck, Rex Grossman, Donovan McNabb or acquire someone new.

There are several things that the Shanahans will be looking at when they asses who they want taking snaps this season

Beck has the most potential and puts boom-or-bust on the table. He was a great at running the offense at BYU, but has been a journeyman, with the occasional appearance since arriving the NFL.

The Redskins traded for him and instantly signed him to a two-year contract extension.

The Redskins have made it clear that they want Beck to be taking snaps this year. During his collegiate years, Beck showed a great arm, and good discipline under center. However, all his strengths disappeared in stints with Miami and Baltimore, totaling only one touchdown versus three interceptions.

Grossman is very turnover-prone, but has made it quite clear that he knows how to lead a team. He led the surprise Chicago Bears to an NFC championship in 2006 and played pretty well down the stretch for the 'Skins. He is probably the most consistent of the options, and if they can re-sign him could consider him as the favorite.

If Washington wants have a holding quarterback until next off-season, Rex is the best way to go.

McNabb seems to be out of the picture, as the front office seemingly wants him out of the Nation's capital. Donovan has undisputed talent, but was removed of his duties due to constant whining. If somehow Bruce Allen decides to bring him back, he can be a solid starter.

He is by far the most proven of the group and if Washington hopes to have a veteran leader in the huddle, they should try to keep McNabb happy. However, with an obvious rebuilding effort in DC, McNabb has probably taken his last snap for the 'Skins.

If Washington is truly serious about winning this year, they have to pursue someone new.

Right now, the leading candidates are Kevin Kolb or Vince Young. Young is explosive, bu very turnover-prone, with a bad attitude. He is also a proven winner. Kolb has had very little chances to prove himself, but he has good accuracy and doesn't throw too many interceptions. He has shown some problems with his arm-strength.

So, it all depends on what the Shanahans want; potential, consistency, veteran leadership or if they believe this core can be great with a better QB.

I think that they should turn to the tremendous upside of John Beck and try to mold him into an NFL-caliber quarterback.
