A Message to the San Francisco 49ers: JTO Has Got to Go

Scott FenderOct 20, 2008

The past few weeks I have struggled for answers. I have to follow all of the games on-line and see almost no highlights. Each week it seems like the 49ers are playing with my emotions.

The 49ers are looking at one of the tougher schedules in the league. They play the NFC East and AFC East which have become two powerhouse divisions. Yet despite this the 49ers have put some fight into the games and have yet to roll over on a team.

That is where the hope comes in and the problems start. Oh, how I wish I was a Lions fan sometimes. At least they know they are going to lose each week. Being a 49er fan is like a heartbreak each week.

Every year I have hope and every year the 49ers do just enough to satisfy my hopes but not enough to actually fulfill them. This year I feel I am at my breaking point. I had hopes of challenging for the NFC West division title and while we are in second I feel like we should either be no where near the top or at least tied.

There are plenty of people to hold accountable for the 49ers ineptness to win ball games, Mike Nolan being the most prominent. But I feel like there is one area where if the 49ers improved, this team would be exponentially better. I think if the 49ers had better play at QB then the team would not be losing as many games.

In the last 4 games J.T. O'Sullivan has committed 12 turnovers. That is 3 per game in 4 losses. In all 5 of San Fransisco's losses O'Sullivan has committed exactly 3 turnovers per game. In the 49ers wins this year, J.T. has exactly zero.

Some people may see the zero turnovers in all of his wins as an example of what he could be. I see it different. I think O'Sullivan steps up against inferior teams (the two wins coming against the Seahawks and the Lions) and is unable to perform against the better teams.

For the 49ers to win anymore games this year, O'Sullivan either needs to get better faster or the QB reigns need to be handed over to Shaun Hill. The 49ers need a game manager not a gunslinger.

O'Sullivan's liking for turning the ball over is becoming tiresome. In the losses this year, O'Sullivan's timely turnovers have cost the 49ers potential wins. In Philadelphia Martz was partly the problem with his head scratching calls, but J.T.'s interceptions were the back breakers.

In total, J.T. O'Sullivan has 5 Fumbles Lost (total of 9 fumbles) and 10 interceptions on the year. This does not really fly in the National Football League. I would not mind if those interceptions were spread out over the games. But in those games where turnovers occurred, the majority are coming in the second half and most importantly the 4th quarter.

JTO has got to go! Rise up 49er faithful and clamor for Shaun Hill. I am not going to assume he is the answer to the problems on offense nor do I know he will be better in the Martz system. But, I do know that when Hill came in last year he did what it took to win games. Credit to O' Sullivan for keeping us in games but after awhile I want to see wins not just heartbreaking, what if losses.

Hill is a game manager. O'Sullivan does a great job spreading he ball around, but Hill did a great job getting the ball to the play-makers. Davis shined the best when Hill was under center. Hill gives the 49ers the best chance to win more games this year than any other QB on the roster.
