Plaxico Burress to Eagles a Risk Worth Taking but Only If the Price Is Right

Darren GrossmanMay 24, 2011

So I read an article about Plaxico Burress and the Eagles perhaps joining forces when the lockout ends.  My first thought was the Eagles don't really need him.  We have DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper showed promise.  However, depending on the money, if Burress doesn't cost much, why wouldn't you want to sign him?

The one thing the Eagles are missing is a tall physical receiver.  Burress would fit that role perfectly.  Also, while he has not played in a couple years and is coming out of jail, is the guy really damaged goods?  I mean, let's be realistic: The man shot himself with his own gun.

We aren't exactly talking about a hardened criminal here.  Burress got the book thrown at him and an example made of him, and the majority of the public believes Burress got hosed when he was sentenced to a long prison term.

Donte Stallworth killed a man and went to jail for about a week.  Burress shot himself with his own gun and went to jail for almost two years.  Where is the justice in that?

However, going to jail means many teams will pass on him.  Like Michael Vick, many teams will shy away from Burress.  That could leave the Eagles in position to get a marque player for pennies on the dollar.  If you can bring Burress in for less than two million a season, you have nothing to lose at that point.  There's so much upside there, and almost no down side.

Let's be honest, having Burress as your number three wide receiver is not a big deal in the pass happy Eagles offense.  He would still get plenty of looks.  Not to mention, Burress is a fantastic down field blocker.  He is big and physical and was one of the better blocking wide receivers in the NFL, which would be great when Vick took off to scramble or McCoy broke free.

So Burress to Philadelphia? Sure, why not?  What do the Eagles have to lose?
