NFL Free Agency: 5 Teams That Need Nnamdi Asomugha to Win a Super Bowl
Cornerback may not be one of the most important positions in the NFL, but a dominant one can turn your team from a pretender to a contender.
Nnamdi Asomugha is second only to Darrelle Revis when ranking the top cornerbacks in the NFL. Asomugha is a shutdown corner who has no problem taking on any team's best receiver. He can jam at the line of scrimmage and has the speed to run with anybody.
Since he has played for the futile Raiders since his rookie season, he will want to sign with a contender. There are several teams on the verge of competing for a Super Bowl, but here are the five best fits for Nnamdi Asomugha.
Dallas Cowboys
1 of 5
The Cowboys were terrible last season, but with Tony Romo coming back from injury, the offense should return to its usual potency. However, the area where the Cowboys still need help is in there secondary. They were ranked 26th in pass defense last year giving up nearly 4,000 yards passing. Since they skipped on Prince Amukamara in the draft, they will have to fix their need at cornerback through free agency.
Baltimore Ravens
2 of 5
The Baltimore Ravens are known for their defensive prowess, but you would be surprised to learn that they were ranked 21st in pass defense last year. There mediocre secondary was most self evident when Antonio Brown caught a 58 yard pass with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for Steelers. The Steelers then proceeded to make the Super Bowl and the Ravens went home empty handed. Nnamdi Asomugha would help this team make a deep playoff run and possibly help them win a Super Bowl.
Houston Texans
3 of 5
The Houston Texans secondary is awful. That would probably be the understatement of the century. They gave up 4200 yards and 33 touchdowns last season. To give you an idea of how awful those stats are, Tom Brady passed for 3,900 yards and 36 touchdowns and won the MVP. They have a great offense, a great defensive line, and pretty good linebackers. The only thing missing is a dominant player in the secondary. Add Nnamdi Asomugha to the mix and they would become contenders to win the AFC South and possibly much more.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4 of 5
Tampa Bay is a young team with superstar-caliber parts. Josh Freeman, Mike Williams, and Legarret Blount will be the cornerstones of their offense for years to come. They also have a great defensive line rotation with Da'Wuan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn being added to the mix. The secondary still needs work though. After Aqib Talib's latest legal troubles, the Bucs are considering parting ways with the troubled corner. Also, Ronde Barber is 36 and won't have much left in the tank after this season. Tampa Bay needs Nnamdi Asomugha to anchor the secondary and be the play maker they need on defense.
Philadelphia Eagles
5 of 5
Just thinking about Asante Samuel and Nnamdi Asomugha in the same same secondary makes my mouth water. The Eagles were ranked 15th in pass defense last year giving up 3400 yards. While that isn't terrible, they still need to improve on defense. With Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel shutting down team's best receivers, the Eagles defense would be a lot more efficient stopping the run. Throw in that nearly unstoppable offense, and you have the new Super Bowl favorites in the Philadelphia Eagles.
