Petr Cech Is Chelsea's Player of the Season: Shows How Bad Season Was for Blues

Stefan GouyetMay 20, 2011

Yesterday, Petr Cech was named Chelsea's Player of the Season.

Many will certainly argue with this, claiming that Ashley Cole, Branislav Ivanovic or Ramires could have won the award instead of the goalkeeper. But the fact is that the Chelsea supporters responded to their team's lackluster campaign by giving the award to the keeper.

In my opinion, Cech hasn't been outstanding this season. He has played well and has had a good season, but Chelsea's defenders have done well overall. After all, Chelsea have conceded the least number of goals this season in the English Premier League (they are at 32 and Manchester City are at 33 with one game left to go in the league).

But the reason for Cech's award isn't because he has been their "best" player. Instead, it's because the fans couldn't find anyone else to pick; there wasn't anyone else that deserved the award.

Last season, Chelsea had a bunch of players that were outstanding: Malouda, Lampard, Drogba, Anelka, A. Cole, etc. Fans may have had a hard time picking the best player because there were so many good ones.

This season, Chelsea fans may have had a trouble picking the best player, but only because nobody stood out and the campaign was a disaster.

At least the Chelsea players aren't completely annoyed and angry: the Chelsea Players' Player of the Season was Ashley Cole (the Chelsea players and staff vote on this award). Cole probably deserves it as he has been consistent.

Still, the fans didn't really feel that the team had done well enough as a whole for anyone to get the Player of the Season Award, leaving it for Petr Cech.
