Early thoughts on the Huskers win against Iowa State

Yes!

A win.

A solid win where a tested Nebraska Cornhuskers team has learned its lessons, stayed focused, and found an identity.

The Good: The first half was the best half of Huskers football since…well, I don’t know. And it could of been better. Solid defensive play held Iowa State to 3-and-outs and the offense showed rhythm, execution, and power. Additionally, the Huskers have an offensive identity they’ve lacked.

The Downside: The absence of penalties were replaced by the frustration of fumbles. Also, there were quite a few turnover opportunities the “D” needs to capitalize on. I’m still waiting for some big plays from the defense. The punting situation also leaves Nebraska very vulnerable to a blowout in the Oklahoma game.

Gameballs:

Shawn Watson: This guy gets it. Husker Nation now knows why Nick Satan at Alabama wanted him to run the show. The Huskers have adjusted and trashed the part of the playbook with heavy formations in favor of a spread offense. He has also  tailored the play calling to Joe Ganz’s strengths.

The spread has allowed emerging stars such as Menelik Holt and Mike McNeill (anyone else really excited about these guys?) to get on the field and contribute. Also, expect a little more of Niles Paul on the field. The Huskers depth at receiving corps will be important in the Huskers finishing strong this year.

Joe Ganz: Smart and improved play. 300 yards. No picks. No forcing the ball where a play didn’t exist.

The D-Line: Great pressure and stuffing the run at the line.

The “Wildcat” and Marlon Lucky: Look for more of this formation going forward. I think the Huskers didn’t want to show to much of it since the game was in hand. I suspect the Sooners will see a healthy dose of the Wildcat to keep them off-balanced.

Barney Cotton: Great improvement on the penalty front for the O-Line. They are slowly becoming a cohesive unit.
