College's Week 8 Review: Is Texas Worthy?

Football ManiaxsOct 19, 2008

By Nostradamus.

The past weekend was highly anticipated to be another slate of close games and potential upsets. What mostly happened was a showcase of some of the 'elite' teams in all of College Football, and only one upset of any substance.

So what did we learn?

Texas is the deserving number 1 team in the country. Missouri and Kansas are still a ways away from competing with the big boys.

Wisconsin is floundering. Washington State may be the worst FBS school in the country. If anybody has any clue who will win the ACC, please let me know. Penn State and Ohio State are set for a clash. Pittsburgh is turning the corner.

The SEC is ready for a fantastic finish, and the Big 12 North is still light years behind the South.

Texas: That was about as dominating a victory as you are going to see. Texas simply manhandled Missouri in all phases of the game and put them away early. In one of the most ridiculous stats I have ever seen, Colt McCoy delivered on 29 of 32 passing attempts for 337 yards and two TDs. He also ran for a couple of scores just to let the Heisman voters know who the front-runner for the award really is.

The 31 points they gave up after the game was decided should not sway anyone's opinion of just how good this team is. Without any doubt, this is the most deserving team to be ranked number 1 in the country right now.

Missouri: As bad as Missouri looked last night, all is not lost for the Tigers. They can still...

play in the Big 12 Championship game and earn their ticket to a very respectable bowl game in the process. They are still a very good football team; they just ran into a buzz saw last night that was ready to go from the opening whistle.  However, it also showed Missouri and the entire Big 12 North just how far away they are from competing with the heavyweights in the Big 12 South.

Kansas: Just like their neighbors to the east, the Jayhawks were simply overmatched by a far better opponent in Oklahoma.  Last year’s two darlings of the Big 12 are finding the waters much deeper this year.  And like their brethren to the East, the 'Hawks are still a good football team.  They are just a far cry from the teams that play south of their borders.

Wisconsin: Wow. Talk about an implosion. Four weeks ago, the Badgers were 3-0 and ranked in the top 10 entering Big 10 play. Four weeks, and four losses later, the Badgers are in the cellar and clawing for their very bowl game lives. Their latest defeat was by far the most humbling as they were pasted 38-16 by a very average Iowa team. Where will they go from here?

Hard to say, but if we have learned anything it is that when things start to go bad they usually get much worse before they get any better.  Not to spark any fires, but there are already some grumblings going on in Camp Randall over the previous darling head coach Bret Bielema.  My, what a difference a month makes.

Penn State: It took a while, but the Spread HD finally kicked it into gear in the second half and put away a wounded Michigan squad 46-17.  Scoring the final 39 points over the last 30+ minutes, the Nittany Lions have set the stage for their clash with......

Ohio State: The Buckeyes put any thoughts of an upset away very early in their contest with the Spartans as they scored early and often in laying a beating on former assistant Mark Dantonio's team 45-7.  In a game where many thought that the Spartans would put the Bucks in their place, it was Terrelle Pryor that served notice that he is and will be the starting QB for Ohio State for the remainder of the year.  With Beanie Wells at his side, the Buckeyes may well be ready for the challenge with the Nits next week.

If Stephen Threet and Brandon Minor can give Penn State some problems, what can Pryor and Wells do in the Shoe? Now, for all the haters of the Big 10 and Ohio State. You must be finding yourself in quite a quandary this week.  Not only do you have to root for Ohio State, but at the same time (if they win) you may be rooting them back into the BCS title talk. Karma sucks sometimes, doesn't it?

Washington State: You really have to feel sorry for this crew up in Pullman, WA.  In their game on Saturday with USC, they were only able to muster...
