Jets-Raiders: Gang Green Embarrass Themselves in Oakland, 16-13

Sergei MiledinOct 19, 2008

The last time Brett Favre played in Oakland was the day after the death of his father. His performance was possibly the greatest of his Canton-bound career, as it won not only the game but the admiration of thousands.

On Sunday, Favre and the New York Jets could not even scrape decent, as they looked foolish against a team who scored three points in the previous week.

Gang Green showed promise with a field goal in their opening drive, as Favre went 5-for-7, only choosing to hand it off once. They were gifted 15 yards by the Raiders, as they could not stay onside causing it to rain penalty flags, a constant theme throughout the game. They would respond with field goal of their own, tying the game 3-3.

The second quarter saw no scoring but would see an interception by Favre, who would have two on the day. He would finish with 197 yards but no TDs.

Favre's counterpart, JaMarcus Russell, would have a better day in 203 yards and the only passing TD of the game. He would find ex-Packer Javon Walker in the third quarter for the receiver's first TD as a Raider, making the score 10-3.

Throughout the day, Favre would rely on Thomas Jones, who rushed for a total of 159 yards but would never reach the end zone.

They would, however, tie up the game, thanks to Leon Washington, who coughed up the ball on a punt return earlier. Washington would rush for 11 yards on his second carry of the game, bringing life to a practically lifeless team tying the game in the process.

Oakland would respond and after a couple penalties would be right back up 13-10 with a Sebastian Janikowski 37-yard field goal with under three minutes to go. Enter Favre, who, at times, looked tired would have one moment of brilliance as he lead the team down the field for a game-tying drive.

Starting on their own five, the team ended up at the Oakland 34 with eight seconds on the clock. Jay Feely's attempt smacked the upright and out, but luckily for him, Oakland had used a timeout to freeze him, a popular trend throughout the league. He would set up again and this time deliver a great kick, tying the game. The teams entered overtime with Raider Nation stunned after the late dramatics.

Neither team could get much going as time dwindled down for both sides with a possible tie looming. The Raiders would put the Jets out of their misery with Janikowski snapping his own team record with a 57-yard field goal, giving his team their first home win of the season.

The Jets now return home to face the Kansas City Chiefs, a game that they should dominate on paper. Unfortunately for them, the game is played on the field and judging their last two games, it wouldn’t come as a big shock if the Jets couldn’t get the job done.

Game Ball: Originally this was going to go to Jay Feely, but after Janikowski's kick went a bit farther, it was not much of a choice for yours truly
