Manny Pacquiao: What Can Pacquiao Do To Keep Fans From Losing Interest?

Tom KinslowMay 18, 2011

Manny Pacquiao Will Fight Juan Manuel Marquez, But Will That Pique Our Interest?

In the aftermath of Manny Pacquiao's fight with Shane Mosley, a lot of fans had seen enough from the champion and his camp.

Pacquiao had pounded Mosley into the dirt and has been just demolishing his opponents of late, and when you have one of the great talents in boxing history, you want to see him push his talents to the brink. You want legendary matchups and legendary fights.

We haven't gotten that from Pacquiao, and it doesn't look like we'll get it any time soon, as he and Juan Manuel Marquez will have a third fight against each other, settling the debate between the two once and for all.

The fact that Pacquiao has a draw and a split-decision victory to his credit over Marquez will draw some interest in this fight, but after this, he has to start thinking out of the box. If he keeps this type of fight selection up, no one is going to tune in except for the most diehard Pacquiao fans.

People aren't going to pony up $55 dollars to watch Pacquiao pound fighters that aren't in his league. Yes, fight fans want to see a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. more than anything, but it's not like that bout is the only option for Pacquiao.

You're telling me that you wouldn't want to see a fight between Pacquiao and Amir Khan? I know I would. What about Victor Ortiz? That's another great option for a future fight for the champion and they're certainly better options than old opponents and recycled Mayweather competitors.

At some point, Pacquiao needs to start pushing himself in the ring, otherwise, we're going to tune out on his fights, simply because we know what's going to happen before the opening bell even rings.

That would be a sad fate for one of the best fighters of his generation.

If Pacquiao can start going after the biggest boys on the block, then we're going to see an added interest in his fights, bouts that can really give us something to talk about when we look back on his career decades from now.
