New England Patriots: Tom Brady Debunks Myths About Being Drafted

Erik FrenzMay 13, 2011

Tom Brady's rise from a sixth-round draft pick to a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP is nothing short of magical.

Even if the stories behind it aren't entirely true.

In an interview with Boomer Esiason, posted by Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, the cerebral quarterback debunked several stories about the events that transpired after being drafted by the Patriots with the 199th overall pick in 2000.

The legend goes something like this: After being drafted by the Patriots, Brady told Robert Kraft that he was the best draft choice Kraft had ever made.

Close, but no cigar. Brady says the statement was a bit more humble.

"He doesn't remember it quite like I remember it. I didn't say it quite like that. I think I said, 'Hey Mr. Kraft, I'm Tom Brady...You'll never regret picking me.'"

That sounds a bit more like the Brady we all know: confident.

As for the stories that Brady said he would beat out Drew Bledsoe in training camp, Brady says even those are a bit overblown.

"Even that story isn't quite how I remember it, either," said Brady. "That's my friend Aaron, who I played with at Michigan, who actually should have been my agent after that, he was selling me so hard...I said, 'I've seen these guys play, I think I can hang.'"

Of course, this does nothing to detract from his legacy. These "myths" weren't what made Brady's story so special. Brady did plenty of work on his own to build his own legacy.

As a three-time Super Bowl champion, Brady will forever be remembered as the guy everyone missed on; even the Patriots.
