Brett Favre: Which Network Would Be Best Fit for Favre's Talents?

Adam LazarusMay 9, 2011

Brett Favre is back in the news today.

Phew! It's about time.

Favre recently told a Mississippi radio station that he might (down the road) show an interest in trying his hand at the broadcast game.

"Could be coaching, could be TV...both of those are probably unlikely, at least anytime soon."

Still, what would an NFL offseason be without predicting Brett Favre's future landing places, either in the NFL, or back home on the tractor in Hattiesburg?

So here's how I see Favre fitting in (or sticking out like a sore thumb) on all the NFL pregame/halftime shows.

Host: James Brown

Coach: Bill Cowher

Players: Boomer Esiason,  Dan Marino, Shannon Sharpe

This just isn't the right fit for Favre.

James Brown is good enough to fold a somewhat reticent Favre into the mix, but Marino and Esiason have bigger personalities than Favre and would step all over him (not to mention show a little jealousy every time they look at Favre's hand and see that Super Bowl ring). And Cowher is already their "rough around the edges" guy.

The only saving grace here might be putting Favre next to Shannon Sharpe: he already has shown great chemistry with the family, albeit briefly, during those three years he and Sterling lit up the NFC Central. Probably some nice stories about Shannon's big brother there.

Ughhh. This is an even worse fit than CBS, which is too bad because I think the format would benefit from another former player there to contribute.

Dan Patrick is great, maybe the best there is. But even he seems to be pulling teeth when trying to get something out of Dungy and Harrison. Adding Favre would probably be another example of a guy who isn't overly energetic and talkative.

Dungy and Harrison are great when they're actually talking football, but they both seem somewhat shy, even edgy on camera. I bet Favre would be the same.

Host: Rich Eisen

Coach: Steve Mariucci

Players: Marshall Faulk, Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp

I could see this one working.

Favre and Mooch (#4's quarterbacks coach from 1992 to 1995) go back a long way so there should be some nice chemistry there.

There would be a more modern feel to the panel than at CBS where two of the quarterbacks are largely 1980s legends.

And the Sapp-Favre rivalry/dislike could make for some juicy hostility.

This would be my Plan B selection.

Fit or No Fit: Somewhat a fit.

Even if he didn't land on the coveted Sunday morning show, he could be a part of the Monday night team...or be an analyst for SportsCenter like Trent Dilfer or Tedy Bruschi.

But you wonder if Favre wouldn't like to join ESPN because they have so many stars. If Favre is as in love with being loved as many speculate, then sharing the spotlight with 8 or 12 or 16 former NFL stars might not be as desirable as sharing it with three or four.

This could work, but not as well as the NFL Network or.....

This just seems like the best fit for the Ol' Gunslinger, and not just because Fox isn't quite a stuffy network as CBS or NBC. (Would cable be beneath Favre?)

They'd have to make room for Favre—six men is far too many—but should TB look to retire after more than a quarter century of broadcasting, they could certainly have a smooth transition in Favre.

They're both Hall of Famers, both Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks, and  both are from the Gulf area. Favre could step in for Bradshaw and keep the twangy, down-home Southern feel going for years to come.

And you know Frank Caliendo's bits will be 10 times funnier with jokes about text messages and crocs.
