NFL Free Agency: Philadelphia Eagles Kevin Kolb Worth a 1st and 2nd-Round Pick?

Michael MillMay 6, 2011

It's still unclear when free agency will begin, but when it does, it shouldn't take long for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb to be on the move.

Yesterday, Charley Casserly reported that he expects the Eagles to receive both first and second-round compensation in the 2012 NFL draft in a trade involving Kolb.

Typically, it's hard to put much stock in such statements, but keep in mind that Casserly is a former GM. His insight goes beyond that of analysts like Adam Schefter.

In fact, Casserly was the GM who made the decision to pull the trigger on Mario Williams over Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFL draft. That was a smart decision in hindsight.

However, there is still difficulty accepting the fact that Kolb has that sort of value.

Kolb has started 19 games in the NFL. He has completed 60.8 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. His quarterback rating is only a 73.2.

How that is worth a first and second-round pick is beyond me.

The 2012 NFL draft will likely have quarterback candidates like Andrew Luck, Terrelle Pryor, Ryan Lindley, Kellen Moore and many others.

Would a team throw a pick away that could land one of those talents, along with another player, just to get Kolb now?

I suppose that teams may see the potential that Kolb has.

Plus, desperation comes into account as well. The NFL is a win-now business. These coaches don't have long if they don't find a way to win games.

It appears that the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks are the top two teams on the radar for Kolb. Apparently, Washington and Miami are on the radar as well, but it's less likely Kolb lands there.

No matter who the team is, if they are willing to offer a first and second-round pick in 2012, there should be little complaint from Eagles fans.

In fact, if a team offers such compensation, I would be happy to pay for Kolb's plane ticket.
