WWE Paper Champs: The Top 10 Shortest WWE Championship Reigns of All-Time

Gone Baby GoneMay 10, 2011

After Christian's reign as World Champ came to an abrupt ending.

I was inspired to do a video slideshow about the shortest heavyweight championship reigns in WWE's history. Sadly, most of these short reigns happened within the past decade or so.

As a wrestling fan, I find it sad that the WWE has decreased the value of their titles. Long gone are the days of holding the main title for a year or for that matter eight months. Instead most title reigns last between three-to-six months.

I get that we live in a very fast paced world, and don't like to wait to see our heroes become champions. However, there is something to be said about the lost art form of storytelling. It is rare that we get to see a wrestler build up their career from nothing, to mid-card champ, to main eventer, to heavyweight champ.

For the past five-years we have seen titles on old reliable's like John Cena, Randy Orton, or Batista. However, when a fresh face like Sheamus lands the gold, he gets stuck in limbo once his reign as champ ends.

Then you have the case of Christian, who time and time again has fallen short. Even though, he has proven himself as a main-eventer in TNA and  has all of the skills along with a huge following.

Most of the time people in Christian's position never get to see themselves as the top dog. However, when they do their time usually doesn't last long.

Here is a list of the shortest heavyweight title reigns in the WWE.

Chris Jericho

1 of 10

Jericho fought an amazing match against WWE's top guy Triple H. Eventually, he would find himself besting the "Cerebral Assassin" and capturing the gold.

Moments later, Triple H would protest the decision and eventually get his way. Sadly, Jericho would find himself with a victory "that never happened" to quote Triple H.

Kane

2 of 10

In the late 90's Kane had popped onto the scene as the Undertakers brother.

Kane quickly found himself in the mix for "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's WWE title. Austin would lose to Kane, thanks to some help from the Undertaker.

However, the following night on RAW Kane was goaded into a rematch and the rest is history.

Kane's reign: 24 hours

Andre the Giant

3 of 10

Andre the Giant was involved in a huge feud with Hulk Hogan. Hogan at the time was unstoppable, that is until he found himself the victim of a conspiracy.

At Saturday Night's Main Event, Andre would beat Hogan as referee Earl Hebner oversaw the match. Minutes after winning the title Andre proclaimed that he was passing the belt to "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.

This was a shock to fans around the world. However, as the story unfolded we found out that Andre and DiBiase were not the only ones conspiring against "The Immortal One".

Yokozuna

4 of 10

Yokozuna just came off a Wrestlemania victory over Bret "the Hitman" Hart. Shortly after the win Hulk Hogan came out to help his fallen friend.

Hogan protested the win which angered Yokozuna's manager Mr. Fuji.

Fuji was confident that his man would beat "The Hulkster" and challenged him to an impromptu title match. Sadly, Fuji witnessed Yokozuna lose in less than a minute.

Dolph Zigler

5 of 10

Zigler was crowned World Champ by his "girlfriend" and interim SmackDown! GM Vickie Guerrero. However, Teddy Long would spoil this momentary title reign as he pitted Zigler against Edge for the main event.

Zigler lost to Edge and has not been a part of the main event scene since.

John Cena

6 of 10

Cena, was just coming off of an Elimination Chamber victory. Battered and beaten, Cena could not even find the strength to celebrate.

Cue Mr. McMahon, who assured Cena would not be champ. Cena, would see his victory go to waste and lose the newly acquired belt to "The Animal" Batista.

Jeff Hardy

7 of 10

Hardy, just won the title during a TLC match at Extreme Rules. When suddenly CM Punk decided it was time to "cash in" his Money in the Bank briefcase.

Hardy's Reign: Minutes

Randy Orton

8 of 10

After being crowned champion, Orton was put in an impromptu match against Triple H. Triple H went onto claim the win and the gold.

However, Triple H would not be champ for long.

Triple H

The very same night Orton was able to land a rematch. This time he would come out on top and reclaim his title.

Triple H's reign: Less than a Hour

Christian

10 of 10

Sadly, Christian's time as champ was short-lived.

It has been speculated that he has something bigger on the horizon. However, I don't honestly see that happening.

Instead, he is just another casualty and the last member of the "Top 10 Shortest Title Reigns".

Christian's Reign: Two days
