Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Fighting Victor Ortiz & Selling "Take the Tests!" T-Shirts

Vitali SMay 5, 2011

According to a very reliable and accurate website, BoxRec.com, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0-0) will be fighting Victor Ortiz (29-2-2) on September 17, 2011 at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. If actually realized, their bout will be for the WBC Welterweight title.

While under their scheduled fight at boxrec.com it states, “both subject to change and commission approval,” it is fairly rare that such happens. Thus it looks like we are in for a Mayweather Jr. fight this year after all. This is not very surprising or unusual, as Mayweather Jr. tends to show face and announce something of value right before a Pacquiao fight.

Just recently, Ortiz won a hard-fought unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten and highly praised Andre Berto (27-1-0). Most fans saw their fight going a different way, with Berto dominating his opponent. Ortiz was able to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with and mentioned his preferred future opposition: Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It may be that Ortiz got his wish to come true. While I see this fight as nothing more than a tune-up for Mayweather Jr., at least it gets him back in the ring. I have little doubt that Ortiz will quickly realize that he has made a mistake in calling out an opponent whose boxing ability is head and shoulders above his own. If happens, this will resemble a sparring session for Mayweather Jr., with him dominating and possibly stopping Ortiz in their fight.

Would Floyd’s win against Ortiz lead to more solidity in his talks with camp Pacquiao? With there being so much drama surrounding their history, I can only say that I hope so. Meanwhile, Mayweather Jr. will start selling T-shirts with “Take The Tests!” printed on them on his official website.
