2011 Kentucky Derby Post Positions: Adjusted Odds for the Field

Brian JonesMay 4, 2011

It's the beginning of May, and that means the Kentucky Derby is upon us. It's a time where the ladies wear some over-the-top hats, and the men empty their pockets to bet on their favorite horse.

Last year it was Super Saver, a 14/1 favorite, who took home the crown. Super Saver was a top contender but was not the odds-on favorite to win, as that title belonged to Lookin at Lucky, who was a 9/2 favorite.

So who is going to win the 137th edition of the derby? Here's a look at some of the top contenders and their odds at winning.

Dialed In: The Odds-On Favorite

1 of 7

Dialed In is a 3/1 favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and based on past performances, he should be the favorite. Dialed In's last win came a month ago, claiming first place in the Florida Derby.

Uncle Mo: Will He Be Ready to Go?

Uncle Mo is the second favorite to win the contest, entering the Derby as a 4/1 favorite. But he has health issues and it's uncertain if he will be 100 percent on Saturday. That could cause concern for supporters of Uncle Mo, so we'll have to wait and see what happens in the next few days.

Nehro: Time to Shine

3 of 7

Nehro is a 8/1 favorite to win the derby, but this is a horse to watch for based on the way he has performed the last two races. Nehro finished second in the Florida Derby by a neck and did the same thing in the Arkansas Derby. Will Nehro be the one to win?

Archarcharch is a 10/1 favorite, but that could and should be higher, considering he was able to claim the Arkansas Derby. Archarcharch has also won the Southwest G-3 and the Sugar Bowl. Now, the only race left for him to win is the Kentucky Derby.

Soldat: Another Horse That Will Demand Attention

Soldat is a 12/1 favorite and caught the eye of many experts after winning the Fountain of Youth and Allow. Soldat did not place in the top three of the Florida Derby, so there's a chance this horse will go out there on Saturday with something to prove.

Mucho Macho Man: Adding Some Georgia Flavor

Mucho Macho Man is a three-year old colt from Georgia and is a top contender in the Derby coming in as a 14/1 favorite. His last race was on March 26, when he came in third at the Louisiana Derby. His last win came on February 19 at Risen Star. Mucho Macho Man is a horse that could really set the horse racing world on fire if he comes away with a win.

Predictions: Who Is Going to Win?

There is always stiff competition at the Kentucky Derby, and this year is no different. Dialed In is the odds-on favorite, but I feel Mucho Macho Man is going to cross the finish line first. He has some good momentum going into the race, and that combined with Uncle Mo's health issues means the chances of him winning are greater than they were before.

But with the Kentucky Derby, you never know what's going to happen.
