Roy Williams to Dallas: For the Good of the Team?

Keith SheltonOct 14, 2008

The Lions officially packed in the season today, for the second time after the firing of Matt Millen.

Jon Kitna was placed on injured reserve and Roy Williams and a seventh-round pick were traded to Dallas for a first, third, and sixth-round pick.

Looking at this objectively, it was a great deal for Detroit and Dallas. Dallas was under pressure to make a deal with the injury to Tony Romo and thus overpaid for Williams. Still, they got a legitimate No. 1 receiver who works hard, thus making Terrell Owens expendable.

Detroit gets valuable draft picks that will help whomever the GM is, come next April's draft.

It's nothing short of a miracle that Detroit got a first-round pick out of a lame duck receiver whose contract expired at season's end, and whose play was mediocre at best this season.

The three draft picks are more than what Dallas offered for Williams before last April's draft.

So what does Detroit do with the draft picks? First, it would be nice if someone that didn't study under Matt Millen made the picks.

With two first-round draft picks, the Lions have a world of possibilities. If they do end up with the No. 1 overall pick, they could either take the top offensive lineman in the class, which looks to be Michael Oher, or the top quarterback, Chase Daniels.

Either one would fill a need. With the second first-round pick, the Lions could still go after a quarterback, such as Florida's Tim Tebow, or they could fill a pressing need at middle linebacker or defensive line.

The more draft picks the better for this perpetually rebuilding organization.

The only storylines left to watch for this year's edition of the furry cats is Orlovsky and possibly Stanton's development at quarterback, and the possibility of 0-16.

Trading Roy Williams was nevertheless a step in the right direction, even if it does result in being the worst team in the NFL. He was gone after this season anyway, and the Lions got great value that will only help future Lions teams.
