Romo Out For 4 Weeks, Williams To The Cowboys, Owens to The Rescue?

eric NixonOct 14, 2008

The Dallas Cowboys acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions on Tuesday.

The Lions get the 'Boys first round pick in 2009 and a third and sixth round pick in 2010.

The Boys get a 5th year, 26 year old receiver (from Texas) who has basically been forgotten about in Detroit. The lackluster Lions have focused their passing game mostly on Calvin Johnson.

With a suspect offense (and defense, and front office, and staff, and coaches, and team, and motivation, and effort...) and not much to choose from in the quarterback department, Williams was mostly overlooked in the 2008 season.

Through week 6 of 2008, he has 17 catches for 232 yards and 1 touchdown. For his career Williams has just under 4,000 yards, 29 touchdowns, and an average of 14.8 yards per catch.

Williams joins an already loaded offensive arsenal in D town. With Marion Barber and Jason Witten and...what is that other guy's name? Oh right, Terrel Owens.

Throw in huge play potential with Felix Jones, and the week by week maturation of Miles Austin and you have to wonder where exactly where Williams will fit in. I will say that Michael Crayton should probably think twice about buying any property in Dallas. I'm not saying his days in Dallas are limited, but I wouldn't get too settled if I was him.

A couple things come to mind right away. And I'm sure the first thing that came to all of our minds was Terrel Owens. How is he going to react to this? And let's not forget, Romo broke his pinky in a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Cardinals and will be out for 4 weeks. Felix Jones has a torn hamstring; out 2-4 weeks.

Anyone who calls themselves a Cowboy fan has to be feeling a little sick right now. But it's time to take a deep breath and find the silver lining. OK, two deep breaths. Here we go...

The last two seasons, the Cowboys have looked awesome in October and November, stumbled through December, and then flubbed it hard, losing in the playoffs.

Maybe, just maybe, this is what they need to come together as a team and build momentum going into the playoffs. I'm reaching, I know, but stay with me.

What if T.O. steps up and becomes a leader through all this? What if he grabs Brad Johnson, the O line, Barber, AND Williams and says, "we can do this if we stick together."?

T.O. has shown he can be good team mate when things are going well. Now he needs to show that he can be a great team mate and a leader when things are tough.

He needs to do this with his actions, and not be a destructive force as we all know he is capable of being.

While Romo is out they will play the Rams, the Bucs, the Giants (rut ro) and have their bye week. If they can come out 6-3 or even 5-4, but more importantly, come out of it as a team and not a collection of personalities, it might just be exactly what they need. Just look at what the Giants did last year...

Championship teams are forged in the fires of adversity. Self centered losers just burn up and blow away...

Mr. Owens...if you're listening...this is your time to shine. Not with stats or with those 27 carat earrings you wear during the game...but with leadership and maturity.

Embrace Williams as the asset he is. Spend the next 4 weeks helping him and letting him help you. Imagine a cohesive unit of Owens, Williams, Witten, Barber, and Romo lined up and taking snaps with a united purpose. Yee Haw! How 'bout them Cowboys?!?
