2011 NFL Draft Results: Post-Draft NFC East Power Rankings
Now the fun begins.
The draft is in the books and NFL training camps are right around the corner. Well, maybe they are right around the corner. I mean, Goodell and his goons have locked the players out again and the 2011 season is in danger.
But I didn’t come to ruin your night. I came to bring good news and good rankings.
Every single NFL team believes that their squad was improved once the draft was completed.
The Giants feel they got better defensively after drafting the Prince, the Cowboys are feeling great about their offensive line following their selection of Tyron Smith, the Redskins got a steal in taking running back Roy Helu to replace Clinton Portis and the Philadelphia Eagles upgraded their offensive line with the pick of 26-year-old Danny Watkins.
So, after having a day to process each and every draft pick, who tops the list as the best team in the NFC East right now?
Here are the post-draft NFC East power rankings.
1. Dallas Cowboys
1 of 4
I have to believe that with a healthy Tony Romo, an improved offensive line, a refocused secondary and a crop of new linebackers, the Dallas Cowboys have to be the favorite in the NFC Beast.
The ‘Boys really responded under head coach Jason Garrett last season and with a new defensive coordinator in Rob Ryan, the Cowboys will be a force in the league next season.
Dallas and their running game should be back to grade "A" with the addition of DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant will return from a fractured ankle. Their schedule sets them up for a run at a pretty high playoff spot next year and they should get there by being champs of the rough and tough NFC East.
2. Philadelphia Eagles
2 of 4
Philly comes in a very close second behind the Cowboys. The Eagles still have Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb, for the time being, as quarterbacks and LeSean McCoy rushed for over 1,000 yards at 5.2 yards a clip.
They will still have an explosive receiving core with Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson and with one of the division's top tight ends in Brent Celek the Eagles should be one the league's best offenses next season.
But Andy didn’t draft an offensive lineman and safety for nothing. Like the Cowboys, Philly’s main weak spots were in front of their quarterback and in the defensive backfield. Philly tried to address those issues by picking Watkins and drafted safety Jaiquawn Jarrett out of Temple.
Even so, I still believe there is a little of an offensive imbalance with Andy and Marty's play calling, and like years past, that will be their undoing in the end.
3. New York Giants
3 of 4
Any team who got their hands on Prince Amukamara was bound to improve. He was graded as the best or the second-best cornerback in this year’s draft class and the Giants system of defense against the pass will greatly improve with his presence.
Again, New York went after a defensive lineman and grabbed Marvin Austin out of UNC to add depth to an already good defensive front. But the Giants were terribly inconsistent last season as they were drubbed by the Packers by 28 points and beat the Redskins by 24.
Who are they?
This may be the make or break year for Eli and his head coach Tom Coughlin because if the Giants fail to deliver in the postseason, the media in the Big Apple will take a bite out Tom and the Giants.
4. Washington Redskins
4 of 4
Ummm…I’m not sure where to start with the ‘Skins. Things didn’t work out with quarterback Donovan McNabb and running back Clinton Portis is no longer on the team, so head coach Mike Shanahan had to make a move to improve the team’s offense.
Former Nebraska running back Roy Helu is now a ‘Skin and will compete for the starting running back position. Washington drafted three wide receivers and two running backs, a sign that a youth movement is on the way and the team has glaring offensive needs.
Still, with all of this newness up in D.C., they are bound to go through a few growing pains because of it. Therefore, last place for the hogs.
