Satisfaction! Why Alabama Fans Are Riding High
As I sit and think about whether Alabama is No. 1 or No. 2, it strikes me: At this point it doesn't matter.
To understand this, you must think about what Alabama football has been through in the past 10 years. To just be relevant again is so satisfying. The little weasel with the infractions committee gloated as he said, "The football program was squarely looking down the barrel of the death penalty."
The current President at South Carolina ran off Coach Gene Stallings. Yes, Coach wanted to spend more time at the ranch, but he wasn't ready when he left. Then we got Dumbo, i.e. DuBose, as our head coach. He was too busy taking showers with his secretary, and the inmates ran the asylum.
Infractions and losses later, we get Coach Fran. Everyone embraced Fran and thought he could be the one to carry us through the troubles. But no, he wouldn't sign the contract and bolted to A&M. How is that working for you, Fran?
Anyway, Mike Price comes to town and decides his work day ends at 5 p.m. You don't win in the SEC by knocking off at five and heading to the bars. Yes, he went to the strip joints in Florida, but he was a regular at the local college bars.
Then pretty boy Coach Shula comes to town. At his introductory press conference we all knew he was in trouble. He could recruit, but he couldn't coach on game day. I don't know if he recruited that well—he spent all his efforts trying to get Tebow when the boy had UF stuff plastered all over his room. I mean, come on Mike.
Then we fire Mike and get our Coach, Nick Saban. With the uproar you would have thought no one had ever not told the press the truth. Why, he's getting four million a year! That's right, from an athletic program that had a profit of $28 million last year!
He may leave, and if he does I will wish him well, because he will have left the program strong again.
But the fact is, we are back. We have to be dealt with again. Tupperware needs to find a place for his finger this year. Hey SEC, you had your chance.
