2011 NFL Draft Results: Meet Cheta Ozougwu, "Mr. Irrelevant"

Bob WarjaApr 30, 2011

Each season, America is fascinated by the very last player chosen in the NFL draft. This year, fans, meet Rice defensive end Cheta Ozougwu, "Mr. Irrelevant."

Ozougwu was chosen by the Houston Texans with the 54th pick in the seventh round, 254th overall.

Despite what you may think, these guys can and have succeeded. And Ozougwa is no exception.

The problem with Ozougwa is he's known as a classic "tweener"—not fast enough to be an outside rusher yet not big enough to be an every-down DE in the league.

Still, his intangibles are solid, for what that's worth. He's considered a mature and hard working and an above average student.

Meanwhile, his pass rush skills do not appear promising. Against the run, he does have some potential, however, and should be able to transition well to OLB in a 3-4 scheme.

And guess what defensive scheme the Texans are switching to? You guessed it. Wade Phillips plans to employ what looks like your basic 3-4.

As expected, a kid drafted this low has some limitations. ESPN's Scout Inc. had this nugget to share about Ozougwu: "Does not appear to have natural football intelligence."

Ouch.

Oh, but if he succeeds he would not be the first to do so. No sir.

"Mr. Irrelevant" has played in Super Bowls, Pro Bowls and a been starter on NFL teams.

In fact, 2009's version, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succoup, tied a record for the highest field goal percentage by a rookie.

So there you go. You can do it, Mr. Irrelevant. Heck, you already have your 15 minutes of fame!
