UFC Champion Anderson Silva Speaks English at UFC Super 7 Q&A

Gregory ChaseApr 29, 2011

Holy Rosetta Stone, Batman!

This was just one reaction that came out of Friday’s Super 7 Q&A for the UFC where for the first time ever, every single champion was together on stage.

It was quite a sight to see all seven UFC Champions from Dominick Cruz all the way up to Cain Velasquez sitting in a line in suits, all donning their respective 12 pounds of gold.

But what captured the attention of many Anderson Silva fans and critics alike around the world, was that the Middleweight Champion performed an even more impressive and jaw-dropping act than his front kick to Vitor Belfort. He spoke English.

Anderson Silva has been known to start off his interviews and responses with English, and then promptly revert back to Portuguese complimented by his manager and translator, Ed Soares. Sometimes he will go on VERY long rants, especially during his Joe Rogan interviews after a win.

Joe Rogan has commented multiple times to Soares jokingly saying that it wasn’t possible he could remember all of what Silva just said, and Soares would have to sum it up more so than usual. But what made the event so impressive, was that every single question was answered in English by the Brazilian champ.

Ed Soares was alongside Joe Rogan to translate Joe’s questions into Portuguese on stage, but Silva responded in English. Of course, his English is not as fluent and precise as his actions in the cage, but he was able to answer pretty well for himself. Not only that, but he seemed to understand English better as well. Soares stood there, but multiple times his services were not needed, and Silva responded directly to Joe Rogan.

This comes as a surprise and also raises suspicion to others. During his campaign to sell and hype the fight, former contender Chael Sonnen had made comments and accusations on many occasions that Silva was a fraud, and was able to speak perfect English all along.

Whether or not this was true, it appeared to many that Silva did know some before now, but when asked a question that required a more complex answer than “I’m very happy,” he would begin his Portuguese since he was not able to give adequate answers to his questions in English.

Whether or not this will continue into his interviews from now on is yet to be determined, but from the look and sound of it, he is putting his time in learning the language better. Whether it was being held back all along, or a new skill he is mastering, it is a welcomed thing to hear from the champion.

But what this really means is that Ed Soares can now get rid of his stocks in Ricola. He can always sell them to Bruce Buffer though.
