2011 NFL Draft Results: Cowboys Make Right Choice in Choosing Demarco Murray?
How bout them Cowboys, eh? Double J and his kids chose versatile running back Demarco Murray, a running back from Oklahoma, with the 71st pick of the third round.
Murray is best known for being the fast guy who wears the No. 7 for the Oklahoma Sooners. He’s unbelievably quick, great at blitz pick-up, and can play the slot pretty well as a wide receiver.
Jones said that the team would look to choose a running back for special teams purposes but I tend believe that Marion Barber’s days as a Cowboy are pretty much over. There have also been concerns about the health of Felix Jones and the consistency of Tashard Choice.
But Dallas still has needs at cornerback, defensive line, and safety. Why would Jerry choose a running back so high in the draft when the Cowboys have yet to pick a corner? For awhile the Cowboys were high on former Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara, so why pass on him and fail to address the need at corner in the first three rounds?
While Murray will bring in added versatility to an already aggressive offense, I have to believe that improving the defense would have been higher on the team’s list of needs.
The negatives on Murray are that he goes down to easily, is a below average pass blocker, and may be to susceptible to injury. Injuries, isn’t that something the ‘Boys are worried about with Felix Jones?
The good thing for the ‘Boys is that there are still four more rounds left in the draft for Jerry to make up for lost rounds. Defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis, offensive guard Will Rackley, and cornerback Chris Culliver were still available when Dallas took Murray in the third round.
Let’s hope that Double J and the ‘Boys address the cornerback and defensive end as the draft continues.
