2011 NFL Draft Results: Minnesota Vikings Steal First-Round Talent Kyle Rudolph

Rob SirplessApr 29, 2011

Minutes ago, the Minnesota Vikings pulled the trigger on the extremely talented, though oft injured, tight end from Notre Dame, Kyle Rudolph.

This choice was predicted, with the Vikings undoubtedly seeking a tight end, but it may strike many as a surprise. Da'Quan Bowers, Marvin Austin and Rahim Moore were still available.

The popular theory for the Vikings during the time leading up to the draft was that they would address the offensive line early. All the experts pointed to a defensive end and possibly a defensive tackle. But the Vikings ignored both of these needs to select the best player available.

Of course we now know that they don't always pick the BPA. But in this situation they returned to the Adrian Peterson kind of pick.

Visanthe Shiancoe is a solid tight end and the starter. But the Vikings are obviously thinking about the future with this pick and giving new offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave his weapons of choice. Note how Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez have been selected all over again this year for Minnesota.

Rudolph is a flashy player with incredible speed for a big man and will ease the possible loss of Sidney Rice in the end zone and on third downs.

Considered the best blocking and catching tight end in the entire draft, Rudolph slipped due to his injuries. If he is able to stay healthy, the Vikings have landed a great offensive weapon who will make them even more difficult to defend. A great choice! (If you ignore the trenches).

Be looking for that offensive lineman to come in the fourth round. John Moffitt of Wisconsin is a possibility. Leslie Frazier said all along that he likes his tackles, but that offensive guard is an area of concern to him.

Once again, the Vikings draft the flashy and BPA in Kyle Rudolph to make new quarterback Christian Ponder's job easier.
