UFC: Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez Targeting Fall, Stadium Show Return

Dana BeckerApr 29, 2011

For Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, the long and painful road to recovery now has a light at the end of the tunnel.

Speaking with reporters recently at a UFC press conference, president Dana White stated that Velasquez is right on track from shoulder surgery to return to the cage in October.

"Cain's good. He's coming along great," White told MMAWeekly.com. "He's actually going to be here (in Toronto for UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields)."

Velasquez, 9-0 in his career, was last seen defeating Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight title in Anaheim, Calif., in 2010. Now, he is preparing to meet either Lesnar in a rematch or contender Junior Dos Santos.

Both Lesnar and Dos Santos are currently coaching teams on The Ultimate Fighter, and will meet in June to decide the No. 1 contender.

White went on to talk about the possibility that the heavyweight title showdown could be set inside of another stadium, bringing to life a UFC event at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

“I think stadium shows are going to be one off shows.  Every time there’s a huge, great fight, I think GSP (Georges St. Pierre) vs. Anderson Silva if that fight happened, would be a stadium show.  Depending on who wins out of Dos Santos and Lesnar against our heavyweight champion, could be a big fight, so who knows,” White stated.
