EPL Preview: Chelsea FC Looking To Finish Off Tottenham's Season
Wigan vs Everton
Wigan have been trying to upset all the odds in recent weeks by getting out of the relegation zone, and they have proved to be more than successful at that by edging ever closer to safety.
With two victories and a draw in the last few matches, they are probably the well-placed team at the moment to escape from relegation. They will, however, face a tough task against Everton who have been extremely good in recent weeks, apart from the defeat to Manchester United last weekend.
Even though David Moyes' side never looked like getting a victory at Old Trafford, they came ever so close to securing a draw against the title favourites.
The increasingly frustrating defeat at Old Trafford dampens the hope of catching Liverpool in the Premier League. This along with Liverpool's five-star performance against Birmingham has meant that they have opened a five-point gap over their arch rivals.
With only a few games remaining, the focus will be shifting toward preventing Bolton from overtaking them in the league. Roberto Martinez has been extremely lucky in terms of injuries in recent weeks, but it is not the case for David Moyes, who will be missing Louis Saha and Marouane Fellaini once again.
Chelsea vs Tottenham
Chelsea will be looking to stop the challenge for Champions League qualification by Tottenham once and for all when they face the fellow Londoners at Stamford Bridge in the Saturday night's late match.
The faltering bid for catching Manchester City in the fourth position was dampened even further following the draw with West Brom last weekend. Tottenham have now won just one of their previous five matches, which does not make good reading for their table position.
Also, Liverpool are close to overtaking Tottenham, which would also result in them losing their current Europa League qualification positions.
However, pressure will be definitely most visible on Chelsea, who have a slim chance of capturing the title away from Manchester United's grasp. They have been given this slight chance of recapturing the title following Man Utd's slip-ups in recent weeks.
To have any chance of overtaking Man Utd, Carlo Ancelotti will know that his side will have to get maximum points against Tottenham. Given that Man Utd do not play until a day later, it is going to be a significant advantage. The participation of Ramires and Alex looks doubtful for Chelsea.
Liverpool vs Newcastle
Liverpool are very close to overtaking Tottenham for the Europa League place, but it remains to be seen if they actually want to qualify for the Europa League over the Champions League. They will have an impressive opportunity to do this when they face Newcastle, who have nothing to play for in the remainder of the season.
One can expect a few changes from Alan Pardew's men, who have been extremely poor in recent weeks, but it is not going to matter for his side anyway.
Liverpool have been showing great improvement under Kenny Dalglish of late, and the revival is expected to continue against Newcastle as well. Liverpool had suffered only one defeat in their last few matches, which has contributed to them extending the lead over Everton to five points.
Hence, the sixth spot looks to have been safely secured, which leaves the fight for the fifth spot the main aim for Liverpool at the moment.
Liverpool are suffering from a fair bit of injuries, but they have gone with their task of upsetting Tottenham's chances of qualifying for the Europa League quietly. The likes of Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson will be missing for Liverpool.
Arsenal vs Manchester United
This is arguably the biggest match of the weekend, which will also provide a slight look into the possible champions of this season. Any sort of a victory from Arsenal will put the possibility of Man Utd winning the title in slight doubt after Chelsea are close to catching Man Utd
However, a Man Utd victory will surely confirm their status as the eventual champions since there are not many games to go. Also, a victory will release Sir Alex Ferguson of an extremely tough match in the remaining four matches.
The form of Arsenal, though, suggests that they could not be having any chance of getting a victory over Man Utd
At the moment after they are struggling with serious lack of form. Only the victory over Blackpool stands out in the past few fixtures, which has obviously resulted in their title bid faltering out.
Now, it's a case of recapturing second place from Chelsea, which wouldn't be possible without a victory over Man Utd Darren Fletcher has resumed training for Man Utd and could feature in the match after a late fitness test. Arsenal do not have any new injury worries.
Manchester City vs West Ham
Man City will have the possibility to close the gap on Arsenal with victory over West Ham, which does not look beyond the possibility given the Londoners poor form at the moment. Even though they looked like recovering from the struggles throughout the season, they have now slipped back to the bottom of the table, and things do not look so bright for Avram Grant's men.
Despite being at the bottom of the table, they are only two points adrift of safety. However, the away match at Eastlands does not provide the ideal opportunity for getting maximum points, which will get them out of relegation trouble.
Man City are yet to be beaten at home this year in any competition, and this does not provide a good reading for West Ham's plight. Another match without any points will risk the possibility of the current requirement of points for safety increasing even further.
Man City seem to have overcome the threat of Tottenham, albeit with some help from Tottenham's poor form as well. Now, they will have the opportunity to capture Arsenal's third place, which will result in automatic qualification to next season's Champions League.
