Australia Ichiban Have Winning Attitude

Rohini IyerOct 13, 2008

The Australian cricket team has been the No. 1 team in the cricketing world for quite a few years now (except when the South African team took the No. 1 spot).

The team's specialty is its all round ability and the standard of the players. Even if in any match the batsmen fail to perform, one can be sure of the bowlers doing their job to win the match.

The standard of the players is such that, even if a player retires or is out due to injury, the replacing players are equally good.

Moreover, the Australians give more importance to the quality rather than seniority. A player has to give his best performance to retain his place on the team.

The team's approach might not be liked by everybody, but it is what makes the Australian team click.

Another important point is that they do not depend on one player, unlike many other teams who falter entirely if the ace player fails. That is the reason why the Australian team manages to win matches without any pressure.

Also, even if they lose a match, they make sure that they rectify their drawbacks and bounce back successfully.

Discipline is another area that the Australians pay attention to. When Andrew Symonds recently failed to attend one of the team meetings, he was made to realize his mistake and was dropped from the side that was supposed to be touring India.

This discipline is what many players lack, and as a result the team suffers.

When the Australian team won the World Cup in 2003, many Indians commented that the Australian team won because they had a good coach in John Buchanan.

He is not their coach anymore, but have the Australians stopped winning? No. They are winning and probably will continue to do so.

They have won four World Cups so far (1987, 1999, 2003, and 2007). Different captains, different players, but they have same consistency.

Their attitude towards the game is always the same—to go and win it! They are absolute task masters and don't rest until they have covered all their deficiencies and faults.

It is this attitude that makes all the difference between a winner and a loser. It's like they say, "The difference between ordinary and extra-ordinary is the little extra," and by the time the other teams realise it, I guess it will be "Super-Extra!"
